It has c-ome to my snd lot to record the death of James Moor, an carle settler, a friend and a comrade in the late ( V.F.IL James Moor was born bn May S. 1836, and was a son of James and Ellen Moor. of t rossgare, Ballyuahineh. fountv Down. Ireland. He arrived in Lyttelton by the Mermaid fi'aptain Rose I with his wife and only child (a daughter) on Christmas Day, ISG'2. About two years later his wife died and left him with his little girl, then of tender years. James Moor did not come much under my notice till late in the 'seventies. He was then in the employ ol the City Council as horse driver, and in that capacity he was always regarded as a very reliable, careful, and steady driver, and it was on that account he was appointed horse driver to the fire engines of the C.V.F.B. I often heard it remarked what a great, amount cf influence he had over the two horses which were under his charge. This was due to his firmness and the great amount of kindness with which ho always treated them. It was quite a delight to go with him to the stable at night after the horses were bedded down for the night to see what a fuss they made of Moor.
