WINDMILLS GO SLOW.
LACK OF WIND THE CAUSE. People who depend on wind-mills for their water supply have been considerably inconvenienced of late owing to the absence of wind. Their “reservoirs,” in some cases, have given out altogether. “ft is quite a common thing for windmills to go slow on it at this time of the year.” said an official of the Water, works Department this morning. “And those people who have not a reserve tank of a decent size find themselves in difficulties. However, F don't think very many people arc affected. Windmills are getting very few and far between now, and arc mostly to be found on the outskirts of the city.” Wind-mills have given out from reasons quite apart from lack of wind. Those that are situated within a short distance <>f the city's mumping stations have been working unsatisfactorily for some time, and many have ceased to function altogether The only reason that the authorities can assign to this is that the pumps at the station have drawn the water away from the windmills. Owing to the depth of the strata from which the pumping station draws the city's supplies it would be almost an impossiblity for the wind-mills which draw from a strata not nearly so low, to function satisfactorily. Artesian wells have been affected in the same manner. “Wind-mills are giving way to electric pumps.” the official said, “and there are few people that will be bothered with them to-day. Those that still have faith in them should certainlv have a reserve tank of at least 200 gallons.”
