BERWICK STREET CHURCH. A successful sale of work and bazaar ■was held in the. Berwick Street Presbyterian Church r hoolroom last Friday and Saturday. Despite the adverse weather conditions the function was well attended, £ll6 16s being taken. The proceeds were in aid of the new building fund. Mr J. W. Beanland opened the bazaar, and congratulated the workers on their enthusiasm in preparing the articles for the various stalls. The following were the stallholders:— Cake stall, Mrs Wrenn and Mrs M'Meelcen : produce stall, Mrs Tennent and Mrs Collins: plain work stall, Mrs Titheridge, Mrs Quartermain, Mrs Marsh, Mrs M’Donald, Mrs Cameron, Mrs Bunn and Mrs Doak; fancy stall. Misses G. and L. Arnott, Miss Robertson and Mrs Macdonald: sweet stall, members of the Senior Bible Class; tea room. Misses M. and R. Smith, Miss Brown and Miss Steel. LOYAL BENEVOLENT LODGE. , M.U., 1.0.0. F. The Loyal Benevolent Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., met on Monday night, N.G Brother G. T. Grover presiding over a good attendance. One candidate was initiated into the Order, P.G. Brothers W. B. Browne and S. M’Gee acting as conductors, and two candidates were proposed for membership. P.G. Brother G. T. Hillsdon reported that he had instructed the secretary to endeavour to arrange for a deputation to wait on the actuary, who would be in Christchurch shortly, to come to a final agreement regarding the surplus appropriation. Brother Ilillsdon's action was endorsed. POPULAR CONCERT. On Thursday last the Edge ware Road Methodist Church gave a successful concert in the St Matthew’s Schoolroom. There was a large attendance and, in addition to the concert, a novel mysterious supper was provided. An attractive musical programme was given, which v.as much appreciated. ST ALBANS EUCHRE ASSEMBLY. There was a record attendance at the weekly euchre assembly last Tuesday. The following were the prize winners:—Mesdames Perrott, Cooper, i Buist, Baxter, J. Colville, Misses Scott
and Phillips, Messrs G. Colville, Payne, Spence, AV. Mitchell, M’Farlanc, 11. Wilson and Barnes. The prize for the three nights’ aggre- | gate was won by Mr C. Hegarty. The series will be continued in the Winton Street Hall next Tuesday. EDGE WARE JAZZ CLUB. The Jazz Club will hold another of its evening in the Winton Street Hall next Wednesday. There will be several novelties in addition to the usual dances. PERSONAL. Mr H. A. Jarden has again been nominated for the position cf president of the Edge ware Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club by the members of the bowling section. Mr L. A. Gordon, of Forfar Street, who has been in the hospital, has returned to his home. Mr Campbell Brown, one of the leading St Albans elocutionists, was married this week. ’BUS SERVICES. The private ’bus driver who was running his ’bus oil the Springfield Road route under contract with the Tramway Board has approached the City Council for a permit to run on the same route in opposition to the Tramwav Board’s ’buses. The Citv Council, however, have held over the application on account of an objection from the Tramway Board. The opposition ’bus, if a permit is obtained, intends to run from the Clock Tower to May’s Road. HOCKEY NOTES. The St Albans Hockey Club is endeavouring to hold a dance during National AA'eek. Although there is plenty of time yet, the club is hopeful of a successful evening. The two teams (senior and junior) are doing well in their matches. The seniors, although they were unfortunate in drawing in two of their hardest matches, are only li points below the leading team (Selwyn A). They also have a good average, having only 10 goals scored against them.
