The stop at Dunsandel which was made by the 5.40 a.m. mail train from Dunedin before the recent time-table accelerations is to be reinstated as from June 22. The mail will now arrive at Christchurch at 5.5 p.m. instead of 5.3 p.m. Messrs Mason and Angus, of the New Zealand railway service, have arrived in England after inspecting the systems of South apd East Africa, Egypt, Italy and France. They are now undertaking a thorough investigation of the British system. * * Sir James Parr this morning conferred with the Dunedin Education Board and promised to Recommend Cabinet to set up a junior high school in South Dunedin to relieve congestion in several schools in that distrlct - Repair work to the Pacific cable between Auckland and Norfolk Island will be carried out by the cable steamer Iris, which will leave Auckland on Saturday. This is the second occasion within a month that the Iris has had to attend to the cable. She returned to Auckland on May 31 after cutting away the damaged portion of the cable not far from Norfolk Island, replacing it with two miles of new cable. This time the location of the damatge is a considerable distance south of Norfolk Island. The annual report of the General Federation of British Trade Unions shows that the membership has fallen by 59,374 to 830.000, the lowest since 1912. while the receipts (£57.730) have declined by £3221 compared with the previous year. The secretary (Mr pleton) attributes the losses in membership chiefly to amalgamations, and loss of membership in unions themselves, but also to the poverty of the unions owing to the reduced contributions following on unemployment. Mr Appleton expresses the opinion that the return to the gold standard may help to solve the problem of trade and unemployment. lie urges a reduction in rates and taxes as another step in the same direction. In chambers in the Supreme Court this morning his Honor Mr Justice Adams heard argument on an application by the co-respondent for a re-trial in the divorce suit Daniel Tranter v. Lucy Tranter and James Lamb. The case was heard in the Supreme Court last month. The respondent did not defend the case, but a defence was entered by the co-respondent, Lamb. The divorce was granted and the jury awarded £ISOO damages against the co-respondent. Lamb. Mr Brown, on behalf of Lamb, this morning applied for a new trial on the question of damages Mr Sargent appeared for the petitioner. A new trial was ordered. At the annual general meeting of the Canterbury F*rogress League to be held in the Y.M.O.A. building next Wednesday the subject of forestry and the. need for increasing the artificial forest areas in Canterbury will comprise the chief business for discussion. An invitation has been extended; to Captain L. Macintosh Ellis, Director of Fores try, to attend and deliver an address on the subject.
