OTAGO UNIVERSITY.
GIFT FOR DENTAL BURSARIES. Ter Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jun- 17. At a meeting of the Otago University t ouncil, Mr T. K. Sidey. Chancellor, offered a gift of £IOOO for dental bursaries to Otago University on condition that the whole of the Sidev bequest was used for the same purpose. This bequest, under the will of Mr Sidey’s father, entitles the council at the expiry of certain life interests to £IO.OOO, while a settlement by Mr Sidey’s mother provides a further £4OOO, making with the Government subsidy £15.000. The offer was referred to the Finance and Medical Committees. The special committee appointed by the University Council to report with reference to the coming commission on university education recommended, inter alia, that colleges should have at . their disposal larger funds for extension and W.E.A. work, also that such work should be under the direction of a university professor. The committee also expressed the opinion that a more assured basis of finance for colleges was urgently necessary. On the question of four independent universities, the committee strongly opposed this as cn- j tirely premature, both for financial and j educational reasons.
