WOMEN’S CLUB.

'OPENING OF NEW ROOMS. The new club rooms of the Canterburv Women’s Club were formally opened last evening, when the president and the committee of the club entertained the members. The. club rooms, which are situated in Dlanchester Street, are satisfactory in every way. Last evening marked the house-warming and the decorating and furnishings have been carried out on a lavish scale. The walls arc in neutral tints, and are in perfect harmony with the carpets and hangings, the former being in tones of blue and beige. Delightfully- comfortable arc the chairs and lounges. The card room and supper and tea rooms are furnished in neutral shades also and all are fitted with glass doors. A roof garden is an addition which will be most useful for many occasions. For the “ At Home,” artistic decorations in the form of pot plants, ferns and palms, and a quantity of lovely- flowers, were to be seen in each and every room. Dlrs H. Holland, the president, who was ably assisted by all the members of the club’s executive, wore a graceful gown of black marocain embroidered in old gold; Miss M. O. Stoddart (vice-president), black panne velvet with georgette sleeves and bands of jet; Dlrs A. S. Adams, handsome gown of black georgette, effectively embroidered with, jet beads and pacin’ blue motifs; Airs J. E. Russell, black georgette; Dlrs R. T. Tosswill, beautiful dress of geranium taffeta with touches of gold tissue; Dlrs S. C. Owen (secretary), black gcorgetto with front panels of black lac© mounted' on ivory georgette; Dliss Orchard,’ black taffeta, effectively embroidered in red and gold; Miss Spence, black brocaded marocain; Dlrs M. DD yatt,* apple green taffeta ,Miot with gold aiul trimmed with gold lace. Mrs Holland received the guests wearing a black marocain frock, lightly embroidered in grey. On the platform were Dlrs Holland, Dlrs Williams, Miss Stoddart.

Mrs Holland said it was with great pleasure that she, as president of the Canterbury Women’s Club, welcomed the members to the new rooms. For quite a considerable time the committee had been concerned about the inadequacy'- of the rooms occupied by the club for the past seven years in Worcester Street. The increased membership made greater accommodation imperative and comfort should be secured, but the difficulty of getting suitable premises as near as possible to the centre of the city proved very' great. The Canterbury' Women’s Club was formed in 1913, after much deliberation and thought by' a very' fine committee of ladies, amongst whom were Mesdames Bradney', Williams, Misses Wilson, W. W. Dlorton and others. Then the Avar

came and the women took up war work with keen interest and many' of the club members went abroad in response to the Empire’s call and others joined the various war relief organisations. The committee, Avith the. practical help of several members, had been busy for Aveeks furnishing and getting the. apartments ready for the opening day. The club had reciprocal relations with fourteen other clubs in New Zealand, Australia and England, and had entertained many distinguished

visitors to Christchurch, who had expressed appreciation and in some cases had sent their photographs. Dlrs Holland said she trusted that the club would fulfil Jio high ideals of its j minders. While the club was a social one and catered in every wav for the enjoyment and social intercourse of its members, the intellectual and educational side of its activities had not been oA'erlooked. She thanked the members who had been so patient, and especially those who helped financially Avith the neAV furnishing fund. They had not done all they Avished, but they could not ask members to Avait any longer before opening the rooms for use. Dlrs William Wilson, as one of the oldest members of the club, gave a resume of the club since its foundation, and said the three first women to organise it Avere the late Dliss Diary Colborne Vecl, Dliss Jessie Dlackay and Dliss B. E. Baughan. She cnogratulated the present club on their work and wished them every success.
