NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. ANNUAL MEETING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 30. The annual meeting- of the New Zealand Rugby Union began this afternoon. Rugby visits to New South Wales were discussed. The question arose when the adoption of a proposal to send a team to New South Wales this year arose. It was suggested the team should not include players who had toured England. Mr J. Prendeville (Wellington) said that the team would be a third fifteen. If it was successful it would kill the game in New South Wales. If not successful, the international record would be spoilt. He objected to the management committee entering into, an agreement without consultation with the delegates. There were two ways out. One was to send a native team, the ether to send a team drawn from the county unions. Mr T. Parata said that th 3 Maori Board would be willing to send a team. A proposal that New South Wales be offered a Maori team was lost by thirtysix votes to thirty, and the original arrangements were agreed to. A motion to increase the voting strength of the big unions from five votes, by giving those with over 120 teams under them five votes ana those with under 120 four votes, was lost. Air O’Neill (Hawke's Bay) moved that the union holding the Ranfurly Shield shall have the option of accepting a challenge in connection with matches, to be played by that union’s team while on tour. Speaking to the motion, he remarked that possession of the shield in Hawke’s Bay had done a lot of good. Before they held the. shield the record gate had been £2OO. Last year their gates touched £llOO. Mr M'Leod said it was more in the interests of New Zealand that a Hawke’s Bay team should be seen by various portions of the Dominion, and not by Hawke's Bay alone. On the other hand, it was unfair that if a Hawke’s Bay team went on tour this year every match it played should be regarded as a shield match. After further discussion it was agreed that notice of motion for the next annual meeting should be given, to revert to the old rule to play the holder for the shield on the holder’s own ground. Mr Grej r (Auckland) moved that in future reinstated players should be eligible for a New Zealand team. This was carried. The president, congratulating the All Blacks on their wonderful record and exemplary conduct, said ho thought the union should take thje opportunity of recognising the services of the manager, Mr S. S. Dean, who had been an ideal man for the position. Mv G. H. Dixon, manager of the 1905 team, said that the team had exceeded expectations. Tours such as these did a great deal of good, and the players came back with broader ideas and a better understanding of sportsmen overseas. He moved a motion congratulating the team, the manager and the select.°rs on their wonderful achievements. Alter various unions had voiced congratulations the motion was carried. On the suggestion of Mr Dean, it was decided to present the cup donated by tne residents of Vancouver for the in-ter-island match. It was also decided ;■? a trophy for competition arr^? n J ?st the Vancouver clubs. ■px9 fficers w ?re elected as follow: sorl’5 or l’ Governor-General; president, Mr H. H. The season will commence to-morrow with the club and grade premierships and the indications are that the series will be the best that have been staged since the introduction of the code here. There is every prospect of keen and spectacular Rugby in the senior grade, with each of the others likely to produce good football. The chief attractions to-morrow will be played on Monica Park. The game between the Hornby and Marist Old Boys A team will be the centre of attraction, and the prospects of a good display of spectacular football seem assured. The Hornby team will field an improved side to that which represented them last season, and their supporters are viewing their prospects with favour. The Marists’ team will be hard to beat, as their combination and fine forward division will be to their advantage. On the No. 2 ground Waimairi will play Linwood, and the advent of the first-named team to senior honours will be of interest to their sunporters. At Sydenham Park there should be a closely contested game between the Sydenham and Marists B teams. Addington will play Woolston at Woolston Park. The junior grade matches should all be keenly contested. An early fixture will be played on each ground, and with a frequent car service available to the gates and adequate accommodation patrons will have every facility of witnessing some good football. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. High grade football is promised in the Canterbury Football Association’s first division competition this season for twelve teams have entered the lists. Those teams, which concluded last season's tournament in the first six positions, now constitute the A division, and the remainder, together with Linwood. Technical Old Boys, and Addingt-on Workshops, form die B division. Two of the most successful teams in last season’s competition will apnear at English Park stadium to-morrow. Nomads annexed the English Cup last season, but only after a memorable tussle with their opponents of to-morrow. Nomads are reported to possess an “all star" combination this season. They are scheduled to meet the shield holders, Sunnyside, in the Charity Cup match on May 16. RANGERS' CLUB. Seniors v. Lyttelton, train leaves 1.30 p.m.—Perry, Lusk. Morley. M’Donald. At the annual meeting of the Now Zealand Football Association a discussion took place on the balance-sheet of the Chinese football team’s tour, which , showed a credit balance of £53, but Messrs Frazer (vice-president). Graves (treasurer) and Campbell (chairman of the Finance Comimttee) claimed that under the circumstances of the tour, which they explained at length, it had proved a much greater success than the association ,had any real right to c-xpect. The delegates accepted the explanations and the balance-sheet was
