At the University Senate Sir Robert Stout moved U) that the Registrar prepare a statement for the Senate showing a list of the Universities in Great Britain in which there is provision in their charter that there must be a report from an external examiner before any degree can be granted; (2) the number of external examiners in the Universities of Britain and Australia: to) the fees if any. paid to professors who act as examiners of their own students. The Mon J. A. Hanau seconded the motion. Professor Segar moved that the word “ federal " be inserted before the word “ universities/’ The conditions in many other universities were quite different from those existing in New Zealand and Australia. Sir Robert Stout said that he was asking iur information m regard to ail universities. Professor Segar replied that the information, if given m the way asked for, would be misleading. Conditions were different. Professor Wall moved that the Senate proceed tc* the next business. Sir Robert Stout remarked that he was not surprised that some members of the Senate desired to suppress discussion on this matter and to suppress the infoimation he had asked for. For the past twelve years, there had been a continual light on the part of the professors to get the whole control of the higher education of New Zealand into their own hands*.
