ARBITRATION COURT.

INTERPRETATION OF AWARD. A clause in the Dominion Wool. Grain and Hide Stores Employees* Award concerning payment for a breakfast half-hour when workers are engaged to commence work before 6.30 a.m. was submitted to tho Arbitration Court to-day for an Interpretation. His Honor Mr Justice Frazer presided, and with hijn were Mr W. Scott, employers' representative, and Mr IL Hunter. workers' representative. Mr H. Worrall appeared on behalf of the workerp. and Mr B. I. Hammond for the employers. Mr Hammond paid the dispute had arisen at Timaru as a result of workers starting at 5 a.m. and ceasing at 7 a.m.. and then starting their ordinary day’.v work at. 8 a.m.. a full period of one hour being allowed for breakfast. Sub-clau.=r (r) of clause 1 stated that men were entitled to payment for a meal interval of half-an-hour, but he submitted that thatprovision apnUed only in cases where half-an-heur and no more was allowed for Mr Hunter asked if it was cerieet that there was onlv one case in which pavnient for the half-hour had not been made. Mr Worrall: There is only one case In which the employers have withheld that pay. Mr Hammond submitted that if a worker wn- given an hour for breakfast pavmert was not provided for. Mr Worrall said that, as far as tlm union was concerped. the clause was so rice’- that if it had not. been that the cm plovers had suggested 1 an application for interpretation. the matter would have been referred to the breach of the award. After further argument the Court reserved its decision. DEADLIGHT FOPX'FKP Mr C. Renn applied to have the complete recommendations of the Council of I Conciliation in the leadlight workers' dispute made into an award, to come into operation on March 2. Mr W. C. Prime, on liehalf of the employers agreed with this course. His Honor said that the award would be made in accordance with the Conciliation Council’s recommendations.
