The Misses Moir, “ Inglewood,” Flaxton, have returned home from a holiday spent at Greymouth, where they were the guests of Mrs Shorland, Union Bank. A London paper mentions that among last year’s inventions by women were a transparent umbrella, interchangeable scissors’ blades, a portable bathing tent in which the owner acts as a pole, and a substitute for hatpins. The 'engagement is announced of Doreen, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. ( Hanlon, Dunedin, to Dr Eric Robin llarty, youngest son of Mr and Mrs T. K. Harty, Devonport. Auckland. On the eve of her marriage about forty young people paid a surprise visit 1 o Miss Hazel Robinson, at her parents’ residence, Bletsoe Avenue, Spreydon. A delightful evening was spent in music and dancing, and the brideelect received many useful gifts. Mr and Mrs M. S. Brown and Miss Phylis Brown, Webb Street, will leave early next week for an extended holiday abroad. Mrs Brown has been entertained during the past few weeks by a wide circle of friends, who have all wished her a happy voyage and a safe return to New Zealand. About seventy young people gathered in the Methodist Schoolroom, Selwyn Street, recently, to celebrate the coming of age of Miss E. Here, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs P. Hore, Rosewarne Street. The Rev R. B. Tinsley congratulated Miss Wore, and expressed the good wishes of the company for her future. Miss Wore suitably responded. Items were given by Air and Airs T. Lewis, of North Brighton, also by Misses S. Down and- I. Thomas. Competitions were won by Aliss D. Lockwood and Air D. Hay The annual meeting of the Opawa branch of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society was held at the residence of Mrs Tait, Opawa, on February 9. There was a good attendance of members, also visitors from other guilds. Alesdames Wilding and Alaicolm were welcomed after a year’s absence in England. The balance-sheet j showed a credit of £1 IQs 9d, after £4O had been forwarded to the general funds. The former officers were reelected. All- Stewart, the superintendent of the Institute, spoke of his work among the sailors, and of their gratitude for the hospitalities given by the guilds in Lyttelton and other parts of the Empire.

A very enjoyable musical evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Hooper, Ferry Road, to celebrate the coming of age of Miss Beatrice Afooar. The drawing room had been, beautifully- decorated with streamers, balloons and flowers. Items were rendered by Misses B. Mooar. A. Hooper, R. Campbell, Ella Campbell, AI. Campbell. Messrs G. Campbell, G. Deaman. E. Cox, G. Hutchinson and T. Safey. Toasts were proposed by Messrs G Campbell, G. Denman and T, Safey. Miss B. Mooar suitably responded. A feature of the evening was the coming of age ceremony, performed by Messrs G. Campbell and G. Deaman, in

which the freedom of the house and like honours were conferred upon the guest of the evening. Aliss Alooar was the recipient tof many useful presents* and a large oak key, beautifully decorated with ribbon as a memento of the occasion. Amongst those present were :

Haldane, the deputysuperintendent registrar, officiated in St Giles’ register office, Bloomsbury. Miss Haldane Nvas appointed deptxtvsuperintendent last April. The bridegroom showed some astonishment at u woman officiating. Although the first marriage conducted by a woman in a register office, women have previously officiated at religious ceremonies. A grand concert by some of the leading artists of Christchurch will be given in St Luke’s Schoolroom, Manchester Street, on Tuesday next, February 17. at 8 p.m., in aid of the Foreign Missionary Fund. The programme includes part singing bv Aliss Alililcent Jennings’ double quartette ; vocal and instrumental duets, songs and violin solos byMesdafnes Alenzies, Bowker and Tait, Misses Eileen Downing and Hannah Packer, and Air J. H. Peek.
