BUILDING SCHOOLS.
TIMBER CUT BY PRISON LABOUR. MINISTER’S EXPLANATION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 13. A scheme by which prison labour in the State sawmill at Erua will be utilised to produce timber at cost price for the construction of new schools was explained by the Minister for Education. The mill is run by the Prisons’ Department and is cutting rinui, matai and totara. The bulk of the output is being taken by the Railways and Public Works Department. The mill is equipped with a modern plant and about forty prisoners are employed under a competent foreman. Sir .Tames Parr stated that the Minister in charge of prisons was desirous of helping him to reduce the cost of school construction and additional machinery was being installed. Tt was hoped to produce the necessary limber for the schools at post price. Auckland and other North Island Education Boards were having I lie scheme submitted to them.
