TRAMS V. BUSES.
LEEDS IN A QUANDARY
In an effort to discover a solution of the ’bus controversy in Leeds, tin Watch. Committee, whose proposal to prohibit privately owned’buses from entering Feeds except, under strict conditions has met with much objection from the traders of the city, met last month, when the question of conditions was discussed. It was understood that the ’bus owners have few objections to two of these conidtions—viz.that no ’bus shall be allowed to pick up paswithin the boundary of the city for a journey lying entirely within the city, and that that portion of a which represents the cost of transit between the boundary and the centre of the city shall bo 2d more than the tram fare. One of the points on which agreement has not been reached is that of flands. It is understood that the committee has agreed to alterations in some of the suggested routes. In others, owing to the narrowness of tlie streets, it was impossible to make alteration. A further point disagreed upon
is that of safety exits, upon tlie provision of which th© committee laid special stress. Various suggestions have been put forward by the bus owners, but the committee has not deemed, it advisable to alter its previous specification. The bus proprietors are to be given a further opportunity of considering the? revised conditions before they are presented to the City Council for final approval.
