SYDNEY RACING SENSATION,
A.J.C. CHAIRMAN’S HORSE LOSES RACE. BELLADONNA DOPE USED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 10, 10.45 a.m.) SYDNEY. November 10. A sensation has been caused in racing circles owing to the hurdler Parvenu, owned by Air Colin Stephen, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, having been doped to prevent his winning a race. Parvenu won in hollow fashion in his last start three weeks ago. and although raised in the weights he was regarded as a, certainty for Saturday’s race and heavily backed by the public and i)iiliters. The horse failed to get into the running until the end and then gained a very bad third, mainly owing to mistaken jumps of the horses ahead of him. On his return to his stall the trainer noticed the horse behaving strangely and had him examined by a veterinary surgeon who declared the animal had been doped with belladonna, which would impair his sight and prevent sure jumping. For an unscrupulous person to slip into the horse-box and insert a hypodermic dope syringe would be but the work of a moment. The police are investigating.
