TROD ON “GAS.”
MQTORIST’S MISTAKE. SMASHES TELEGRAPH POLE. Per Press Association*. WELLINGTON, November 10. The failure of two drivers to dim the lights on their motor-cars is thought to be accountable for an accident which occurred on the Hutt Road on Saturday night, in which lour persons were injured. Stanley Aston, who was returning from Petone to Wellington, states when near the railway bridge at Kaiwarra, ! he saw approaching him two motor-cars ; with strong headlights. He dimmed his j lights, but the others did not. As a consequence he became blinded by the glare and found himself heading straight for one of the concrete piers i of the bridge. He swerved sharply to j avoid it . at the same time pushing j down w hat lie thought was the foot- j brake, but which proved to lie tlie ac- i celerator. The car leapt forward and i struck a stout telegraph pole, snapping * it in two. It. then turned a complete somersault and became a wreck. Aston had bis left arm broken, but the other occupants escaped with slight injuries.
