SIR SIDNEY KIDMAN IN COURT.

Sir Sidney Kidman, the cattle king, was fined £lO for failing to furnish a land tax return. It was disclosed that when he made his last return his holdings were valued at £520,000. It was announced last month that the Commonwealth Ministry had decided to appoint a commission to inquire into allegations made by Mr J. H. Scullin against the Government that the Taxation Department was not pressing claims for taxation against big land owners, one of whom, Mr Scullin said, owed the country £IOO.OOO. He claimed that there was £2.000,000 land tax and £2,000,000 income tax outstanding. Later it was reported that a writ for £156,000 had been issued against Sir Sidney Kidman for land tax alleged to be due to the Commonwealth Government for the financial years 1915-16 to 1922-23. This case was one of those mentioned in the House of Representatives by Mr Scullin.
