LATE SOCIAL NEWS.

ST GEORGE’S MARKET. Last evening a very enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mrs J. Brown, Papanui, in honour of Miss Black, who is shortly leaving Christchurch. During the evening Miss Black was presented with a handsome teaset, on behalf of her fellow workers in John Bates and Co. Music, singing, dancing and competitions were indulged in, the prize-winners being:—Miss Ethel Brown and Miss Black, and Mr Perrin.

A novel entertainment was field in the Winton Street Hall, St Albans, last evening. The function took the form of a moving picture show, and the hall was packed to its full capacity. The entertainment was under the auspices of tlie St Albans Swimming Club, and the proceeds were for the benefit of the club’s Carnival Queen. Miss Andrews was at the piano, and Mr M’Dougall operated the lantern. The Art Gallery presented an unusually gay and animated appearance for the opening of the market in aid of the Church hospital fund this afternoon. Captain Tabu Rhodes, chairman of the executive, spoke of the aims of the church people who, for so long, have been working for the hospital. He then introduced Mrs George Gould, who declared the market open. Brisk business then began at all the stalls, heavily laden with beautiful things. Mrs Algar Williams, Mrs George Gould, Airs F. Scott and Mrs Eric Harper were in charge of the antique and china stall. Other stallholders were:—Flower stall, Mrs Bayley and Miss Hiatt; children’s corner, Mrs Griffiths, assisted by Mrs F. Dunnage, Mrs Stewart and the Misses Dora Dunnage and Nancy Painter. Sweet stall. Miss Joy Andrews and several girl helpers, Misses Barbara Webb, Joyce Seth-Smith, Connie Ledger and Mollie Black; bags and aprons, Mrs B. Allen and Miss Bowen ; pencil stall, Mrs Hadfield and Mr J. R. Evans; bookstall, Miss A. M- OlHvier, assisted by Mrs Boys, Airs Garbett, Airs F. Robinson and Mrs Marrie and the Misses Parkenson, Cotterill, S. Overton, Courage and Spooner; hat stall. Airs Herbert Jones, assisted by Alesdames Firth, Cotterill, Wyvern Hoare, Flower and J. H. Williams; cake stall, Airs Webley and Airs Mackechnie; men’s stall. Airs Whatman; emporium, Airs Calson; produce Mrs J. R. Wilson; needlework, Mrs 'Frank Jones; children’s clothing, Mrs Chirers ; nurses' stall Sister Jones. Two mysterious Zoe and Zi 11 ah—-told fortunes, and various competitions were run by Air Edridge and others.
