CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. Y. \Y id dorr son, S.M.) ATTEAIPTED SFK LDE. A woman, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, appeared for sentence on a charge of atteiajHing to commit suicide. She was convicted and ordered to come up lor sentence when called upon at any time within six months. THEFT OF A SUIT CASE. 2V young man, twenty years nt age. appeared for sentence on a charge or stealing a .suit case and its contents, valued at JEJO. Mr Batchelor asked that accused should be granted probation. He had not been in trouble for several years, his last offence having been committed when he was quite young. Since leaving the industrial school lie had behaved himself well and ui present he was in a good position. He had committed the theft, because fie was short of money. Accused had spent the last seven days in gaol and had therefore suffered for his offence*. Mr Batchelor asked tliat accused’s name should be suppressed, not for ins own sake but for the >aue of his sisters. The Magistrate said that accused seemed to have been handicapped right from the start, of Ids life. 1 is' hoped his present trouble would be a lesson to him. Accused was placed on probation for two years, a special provision being that his amusements and recreation should be under the supervision of the probation officer. An order was made that accused’s name should not Lie published.
