AVONSIDE CLUB. The annual meeting of the Avonside Lawn Tennis Club was held last night. Mr F. J. Murray presiding- over an attendance of seventy members. In moving the adoption of the annual report, which has been published, the president said the club had practically “ put its house in order,” and the past year had been a most satisfactory one. The courts had been used for various tournaments, including the school competitions. The generosity of the club in that direction had not been misdirected. The standard of play at Avon- ' side was improving all round, and he thought there were younger members who would come to the fore. He congratulated Miss Speirs on having won the ladies’ championship of New Zealand, and said that it was a splendid thing for the club and for the province. She was a great player, and if she went to England and practised there she would soon be in the first flight. Various improvements, including the installation of hot showers, had been introduced. but much remained to be done. The courts would soon have to be repaired. Sunday play had increased in popularity and he was sure that even some of those who were not in favour <>r : it had been brought round. It had not i been a. step backward. (Applause.)
