PROFESSOR COPLAND APPOINTED. A cable message received in Christchurch to-day states that Professor D. D. Copland, a graduate of Canterbury College, lias been appointed to the chair of commerce* and economics at th© University of Melbourne, the most important position of :’i> kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Professor Copland, a South Canterbury boy. first attended tho Esk Valley School, near St. Andrews, and then the \\ imitate District- High. School. Ho came to Canterbury College and distinguished himself by gaining an exhibition scholarship in*economics. In 1915 he graduated, as 8.A.. and in 1916 M.A., with first-class honours m economics. In 1916, lie agricultural statistics iu the Government Statistictiair’s office in Wellington. Later in the year,, ho was appointed assistant .to Dr Flight, professor of economics at Canterbury College. lie also became assistant master at the Boys’ High .School, and ono A the tutors under the W.E.A. In 1317, ho was appointed lecturer in history and economics at the University -ji Tasmania. Ho distinguished himtelf there both in teaching and in the organisation of the department and in research work, so much so that in 1920 tho University authorities relieved him of history, created a sepa rate chair of economics, and appointed Professor Copland to it. as well as making him director of tutorial clasps for the whole of Tasmania. Now lie lias been selected to fill a more important position, an honour that fis ft'ell deserved, because Professor Copland has done more than anyone else hiring the last few years to advance Australia. He is the author of several works on currency, finance and fiscal policy.
