ORIGIN OF RUGBY.
Mr H. Hibbcrt, of Marlborough Street. Linwood, forwards the following clipping from a London journal:— Rugby football Ims just celebrated its centenary. A hundred years ago a boy called William Webb Ellis was one day playing football at Rugby School when he caught the ball in his arms and, instead of dropping it again and kicking it, carried it towards the goal. This exploit is immortalised by a tablet at Rugby, which has the following inscription : This Stone Commemorates The Exploit Of William Webb Ellis Who, with a fine disregard for the Rules Of Football As Played In His Time, First Took The Ball In' His Arms And Ran With It. Thus Originating The Distinctive Feature Of The Rugby Game, A.D. 1823. The action of William Webb Ellis set other boys thinking how a new football game might be evolved —and henee modern Rugby. Assoc.ation football is still played at most English public schools. Among the fchools that play Rugby are HaileyLury, Sherborne, Tonbridge, and, of course, Rugby itself. The game is also played at the .Scottish public schools.
