BREWERS AND HOTELS.
« NO SINISTER CONTROL.” NOT 20 PER CENT. “ TIED ” HOUSES. (Special to the ‘•'Star.*') WELLINGTON, July 18. A. vigorous defence of the brewing interests against the charge of running “tied” licensed houses was made by the chairman of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., Mr A. S. Bankart, at the annual meeting of the company, yesterday. In the course of his address, he said:— “While it is perfectly true that wo are in no way financially interested in any hotel property whatever, yet, in common with the owners of licensed hotel property and merchants dealing in wines and spirits, we are concerned in the general position of the licensed trade. “It may be of interest to shareholders to know that out of the 1141 hotels- in the Dominion over S(j per cent, are owned by individuals who are either the licensees themselves or are not purveyors of alcoholic liquors. The man in the street generally refers to the ‘ brewers ’ as though they were* sbm© malign body exercising a sinister control of licensees. “As I have said, your company, easily the largest brewers in the Dominion, .does not own either the freehold or a leasehold interest of any hotel whatever, and it is doubtful if ever 20 per cent, of the hotels are owned by wine and spirit merchants.”
