HEAD TEACHERS.
WOMEN’S QUALIFICATIONS. The question of whether or not women teachers were as suitable as head teachers in Grade 111. A., schools as were men was briefly discussed at this morning’s meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. The Department of Education wrote asking for an expression of opinion as to whether men or women should fill the position of head teachers in Grade 111. A. Mr W. A. Banks moved that a subcommittee should be set up to state reasons against the appointment of women as head teachers in such schools. Women teachers, he said* could not secure the same discipline among the elder boys as could a male teacher. Mr J. Hughes expressed the opinion that where there were two teachers, | one should be a male and one a fe- i maie. Mr J. G. Gow said there were many ? excellent woipen teachers who could j maintain perfect discipline. He did not think any action should be taken that would prejudice the rights of the lady teachers. The matter was one to which careful consideration should bo given before any expression of opin- | ion was made. The matter was referred to the Ap- i Pointments Committee. i
