APPOINTMENTS MADE.
SERIOUS POSITION IN CHINA. DR SUN’S DEATH STILL DENIED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Mav 20. 11.30 a.m.) PEKING, May 19. A mandate was issued last night nominating Northern Generals to posts as Military and Civil Governors at Canton. It is explained semi-officially, that while the Government has received denials of the reports of Dr Sun-Yat-Sen’s death, it also has received information casting doubt upon the denials made at Canton, together with hints that the Canton leaders intended to appoint a new Commander-in-Chief and Civil Governor. The mandated appointments therefore are looked upon as a precautionary measure on the part of the Peking Government. There are two Governments in China, known as the Northern ’“and Southern Republic respectively. The Southern Republic Avas formed by I>r Sun-Yat-Sen, who broke that district away from its allegiance to the Northern Republic.
