DEFENCE NOTES.

(BY “ THE ORDERLY.”) A conference between officers of the First Battalion (Canterbury Regiment) and Headquarters was to have been' held last night to discuss the scheme of training for the year and also to make arrangements lor a mess dinner. During last week about three hundred Cadets were medically examined for pcisting to the Territorials. A fair proportion of those who were examined were classified as unfit for service with the Territorial force, and these have been posted to the unfit roll. Representatives were present from the various units of the Territorial Force and the lads were given an opportunity of nominating the units of the Territorial Force to which they desired to be posted. A posting parade will be held on Monday evening, June 2, when all Cadets who are to be posted to the Territorials will parade and will then be taken over by their new unit- repreThe special training platoon of the 4th (Cadet) Battalion, Canterbury Regiment-, is carrying on the usual weekly parades. The new recruits for this unit paraded on Wednesday evening last-, and the whole of those offering, with only two exceptions, were accepted. Those members of the special training platoon who were recently appointed as non-commissioner officers, will continue to parade with their old unit until May 31, when they will return to their companies to take up work as N.C.O.’s. Parades are not being held at present for the 4th (Cadet) Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, owing t-o the- nearness of the end of the training year. Parades will be resumed as from June 9. The Christchurch Defence Rifle Club and the Sumner-Redcliffs Defence Rifle Club will fire the musketry course at the Redcliffs rifle range on Saturday next, to enable members to qualify for the free issue of ammunition. Rifle Club members are now entitled to ICO, rounds of ammunition if they qualify in the musketry course, and to a further ICO rounds if they qualify as marksmen.
