English writers have devoted a lob of attention, the Grand National Steeplechase, to the romantic history ol Master Robert, the winner of the great cross country race at Liverpool. Cntil Superman injured himself at Gat wick, that horse was regarded as the chief hope for the Grand National i by the .stable presided over by Mr I ''Aubrey Hastings, but it turned out that they had an efficient substitute in Master Robert, belonging to Lord Airlie and the only horse he owns. Bred by Mr Robert M’Kinley. a farmer of County Donegal, and foaled in 1913 lie is a chestnut gelding by Moorside Tl. (son of St Aidan) out of Dodds, by Dazzle out of Venezuela, by Crowberry, and possesses a past almost as romantic as did Rubio, who secured the blue ribbon of the ’chase in 1908. Placed under the charge of the late A. Anthony, he did work with Trovtown in his National preparation, but, being considered of little account, was returned to his dwner. who. after working him on his farm, even at the plough, sold him as a hunter for 50 guineas. He changed hands several times after this before 'his present owner acquired him for something like 220 guineas for the purpose of competing in the Scottish Military Plate at the Perth Hunt meeting in September, 1922, a three-mile event, in which, ridden by Lord Airlie, he started the outsider of three and finished alone. The same year he captured the l nited Services’ Handicap Steeplechase at Newbury, and the next season won the Open Military Handicap Steeplechase at Cheltenham and the Valentine (amateur riders) Steeplechase at Liverpool, having Mr P. Roberts as his pilot in each of these contests. It was in the Foxhunters* Steeplechase over the Grand National course in March last season that he first showed his ability to get the difficult Aintree country, when he ran third to Gracious Gift. Moorside 11. the sire of Master Robert, was awarded a King’s premium in 1923. and travelled the district of Northumberland, fie was quite a useful cross-country performer, and among the races he won was the Becher Steeplechase at Liverpool in 1909, when all the eight starters fell and Moorside IT., being remounted, was the only one to finish. Lord Airlie, the owner of Master Robert. was born on July 18, 1893, aid succeeded to the title in June, 1900. R. Trudgill, who had the mount on Master Robert and had received a nasty fall the previous day when riding Charley "Wise was so excited when he had finished that he afterwards collapsed and had to receive medical attention. >

Acceptances for the first dav of the South Cnaterburv Jockev ’ Club’s autumn meeting will close at eight o’clock to-morrow night. •,

Nominations for the Ashburton TrotClubs winter meeting will close at five o clock on Fridav evening.

Three more yearling colts from Sir ueorge Clifford s Stonyhurst Stud have arrived at Ricearton. and Cutts Brotiiers will make an early start to prepare them for two-year-old racing. They are Tam Glen. by Boniform— Scottish Star. by Cl an ran aid —Safeguard : A esperus. by Autunmus—Glenowlet, by Clanranald—Madowla ; and Dark Snot, by The Ace—Hcatherbrae. by Treadmill—Bonnie Brae.

The throe-year-old Rich Prize. bv Sanquhar or Antagonist from Sailor’s Hope, is back under the care of Cutts Brothers at Ricearton, after a spell at his owner’s stud.

Having completed a season’s racing on the West Coast, lip Up, Kikim. First Aid. Hiero and Paul Pry have arrived at Ricearton. They will make their headquarters there fo.r the present. and probably will be raced at the South Canterbury and Ashburton meetings before they return home.

He was accompanied by h two-year-old colt by Kilbrcnev from Camieu, by Down.shire from Camville. Geo. Jones will he settled in his new I quarters at Napier in a few days with Mr T. H. Lowry's horses. Tn. addition to the yearlings he has been' working at Trent ham he will take ! over Highland and the nack twoj vear-old Nigger Minstrel from F. I Davis. These. with Phoenix Park, I Orofino and Table Talk, will comprise ' his team for the present

Scion is expected to arrive, at Riecarton to-morrow. He will go to •V ash dyke to-morrow, for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and lie will also compete at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s fixture next month. F. D. Jones contemplates leaving for Sydney next month. He has not made up his mind as to the size of his team, but it is possible that it will consist of half a dozen horses.

Mi*? Garanca jumped a round of the steeplechase fences at Ricearton on Saturday, giving a good exhibition. It is'probable, however, that she will }>e confined to hurdle racing this winter, and she may pick up a stake before long.

The Waimate Hunt Club’s meeting provides for stakes of £6OO, or £3O more than last year. Tfie hurdle race will be an open event, with £IOO instead of being confined to hunters, with a stake of £75. The Waimate Steeplechase will he worth £l3O, an increase of £o. The other five races on the programme will carry the same stakes as last year —Bluocliffs Steeplechase £75, Hunt Club Cup £BO. Waihiao Hack Handicap £7o, Morven Welter Handicap £75 and Hunters' Plate £55.

Logan Lou was suffering from a cold when last raced, but she has now recovered. This promising young pacer continues to show' improvement and will uofe be long before she is competing in the best classes.

J. Lorgelly has a two-year-old gelding by Ballin receiving his education at Addington. He is well grown and a natural pacer. He is the first of his sire’s progeny I have seen on a track. The following remit has been framed by the South Canterbury Jockey Club for discussion by the Racing Conference:—“That no club be allowed to race except with the consent of the Racing or Trotting Conference.”

En Route is credited with running a good race in the Century Hurdle Handicap at Wanganui and except that he got rather close to one hurdle his jumping was very good. He tired over the last part of the journey but he should do better in the big hurdle races during the winter.

First Born gave a good showing in the Century Hurdle Handicap and he can be marked off as one of the most promising horses in the business. J. R. Kaan was to have ridden San Forte in the Wanganui Steeplechase, but owing to being injured when Sir Rosebery fell in the preceding event he had to miss the ride. P. M’Brearty thus secured a lucky mount and he ga\’e a fine exhibition of "horsemanship, which assisted San Forte towards suc-

Skull caps for steeplechase jockeys as used on all courses in Australia and New Zealand are likely to be generally adopted in England! The prominent hurdle horseman G., Duller has secured a helmet such as is usually worn by motor-cyclists for the inspection by the representative of the National Hunt Committee.. Ther x e are other samples of helmets under consideration, one made of rubber and another of aluminium, but the one most favoured by Duller is made of fibre and dork weighing little more than half a pound. The English Racing Calendar states that the stewards of the Jockey Club having received a report from the manager of the Heath at Newmarket that J.L. Jarvis had wilfully galloped seventeen horses on ground which he had been warned was closed, they severely reprimanded him and inflicted the maximum fine of £IOO.

Besides his racing team J. M. Cameron brought back from Australa a horse named Tunbridge, an English importation purchased from Mr E. J. Watt. Tunbridge will probably do stud duty in Hawke’s Bay. There were several falls in the jumping races on the first day of the Wanganui meeting, with unfortunate results for the riders. J. R. Kaan (Sir Rosebery) injured a leg, R. Syme (Tokomoana), received injuries to his head and body and J. Roach (Royal Fame) broke a collarbone. Starland broke down while competing in the Wanganui Steeplechase last week.

Master Peter chanced some of his fences in the Wanganui Steeplechase and was done with a long way from home. He did a little better on

Saturday, when ho filled third place in the Grandstand Steeplechase. He is still backward and will not be at the top of his form for some time yet. i It is understood that he is not going to Auckland, but that he will be home to fulfil his; second-day engagement at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. | The Dunedin Jockey Club has decided to guarantee a night train to ! Christchurch for passengers and j horses, at the conclusion of the win- ■ ter meeting next month. C. Christie has soon tired of AusI tralia, where he went recently with ! Mr R. Acton Adams’ team of jumpers. Hu was expected to remain for several j months, but it is reported now that ; ho is coming home in time to race ! his horses at the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting next month. ; Lochella is amiss, hut it is underj stood that dissatisfaction with the handicapping of some of tTTe horses is ! the real reason for the change of [ plans. # # George Price, who arrived in Weli lington Trom Sydney last week. ex-* poets to remain in the Dominion for | loss than a fortnight, when he will j return to Australia. It is unlikely ! that he. will find time to come to 1 j Christchurch, whore he has many friends who would have enjoyed the ; opportunity of congratulating the I popular little trainer on his recent ‘ successes in Australia. When he goes i-j back to Sydney he will hare to make rS a start to break in eight yearlings, > i among them being a two thousand ■ i guinea Valais colt purchased last ■ j month by Air F. Moss, the owner of Stony. With such a hatch of young- - | sters. Price will be kept busy during the winter months.

The conditions were very unpleasant for training operations at Ricearton this morning. Rain fell overnight, and though it was fine when work started, the rain set in again later, growing worse as the morning wore on. All the fast work was done on the number six grass track, which was greasy and a trifle heavy. Gay Queen and Bonito were companions in a three furlong sprint, which they ran in 38 4-ssec. Palestrina broke away at the seven furlong post, and with Respondent as a mate over the last five, she ran home in lmin 31 2-ssec. It was the best gallop of the morning over this distance and she finished well. Winning Hit and Whipping Boy galloped seven furlongs in company. "They kept together till the straight was reached, when Winning Hit drew away, being three lengths in front at the finish in lmin 32 3-osec. Rivalry had War seer as a mate in a five furlong spin, which occupied lmin. 7 3-osec, and Weldone sprinted half a mile, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Red Kriss occupied lmin 23sec over the last six of seven furlongs, and Whipcord was given a working gallop over a mile and a quarter. Fresco covered six furlongs in lmin 22 2-osec, going very easily at the finish. Alfonso was sent over five furlongs, taking lmin lOsec, but he was not going his best. Viewpoint, with Thorndale as a mate over the last five, took lmin 33 3-osec to run seven furlongs.

Tarleton reeled off six furlongs nicely in lmin 18see, but he was carrying a light weight. Goosestep and Carpentier went off fast from the six furlong post, and the former was an easy winner in lmin 18 2-sseo. This was a smart performance, as Goosestep had a good weight to carry.

Castellan was going well at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 19sec. Boadioea and Royal Star broke away at the mile post, being joined by Last Dart after going a furlong. BoadicOa wound up an easy winner from Last Dart, the full journey occupying lmin 47 3*-ssee. Boadieea went very pleasingly, but Royal Star shoped moderately. Relic and Bracken field were associated in a useful gallop over six furlongs, Rigel and Gay Life taking lmin 21sec over the same ground.

HAWKE’S BAY NOTES. (Special to the -'Star.”) NAFTER, May 19. Trainer George Jones has gone to Auckland to bring back Nigger Minstrel, Phoenix Park, and Table Talk. Kovno is being limited with the Dannevirke hounds and he may run in hunters’ events during me winter in Mr E. E. Twist’s colours. San Forte, who won both the big steeplechases at Wanganui, is expected to do a lot better later in the season. Earthshine, in V. IT. Collelo's stable at Hastings, is jumping well. Three of Mr Frank Ormond’s other horses. Misgovern, Parearau and Stymie, have been turned out for a spell, notwithstanding that Misgovern looked as though the. winter tracks should have suited her. Mr Ormond, however, has Kirkwood and Selemite still in training. The last-named is by King Mark from Se’ene. A couple of two-year-olds belonging to the same owner, and by King Mark

' - Birkelot and Finland - Selen© respectively, are also in J. Oldfield’s stable, i Ranui was a big disappointment at ! Wanganui to many Hawke’s Bay baeki Black Art jumped big fences well before leaving for Wanganui but. like his brother. Alana waponga, a. bit of distance troubles him. if he keeps sound, however. he should not go .through the season without winning a ] cross country event. f Antler surprised a good many people | by running so prominently on the first j day at Wan ga n ui.
