A letter was received by the i ity Council last night from the bouth | Island War Memorial Fund asking lor , a subscription towards the erection or a war memorial at Tuahiwi, near lyaia- j poi. to commemorate those members of the native rave of the South Island who gave their lives in the Great Vi ar 1914-18. Xo action was taken by the councilThe suggestion that the Railway Department should adopt brighter posters lor advertising excursions was made by Mr p. H. Cliraie at a meeting of the Canterbury District Railway Committee vesterday. He produced samples of advertising by English companies and contrasted them with t.ie -Xew Zealand Railway Department’s plam poster—“ a most unattractive looking document,*’ was how he described it. Mr H. Chapman. District Traffic Manager. said the Department did not have any difficulty in getting people, and he instanced the case of the Otira excursion, in which, he said, more were offering than the Department could take. Mr Climie replied that in this case the Department had the longest tunnel in the Empire as an attraction. Another member of the committee said that in England cele- \ brated artists were being engaged to ; draw posters for railways. The committee decided to forward specimens of the English povsters to the General I Manager of Railways.
