CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER.

Pam PmiM Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, May 19. At the Police Court Eruera Tangiora, farmer at Parewanui, Bulls, was charged with the attempted murder of William Ross, at Parewanui on April 27. Ross gave evidence that he managed a farm at Parewanui. The day before the occurrence he received a message from a son of accused that the latter wantd to see him. Next morning he went on horseback in the direction of accused’s house and saw accused standing near his house with a rifle in his hands. Accused said, “ Put up vour hands. I'll talk to you.’’ Witness turned the horse round and lay down on the animal. He heard a report and felt that he was struck-in the back. Witness went for his life on horseback. He heard two other bullets whizz past him. He produced the coat he then was wearing, showing two holes caused by bullets. He had no ill feeling against accused, and was at a loss to understand the shooting. Dr Watson gave evidence that Ross Kad sustained a wound through the muscles of the back, about four inches long. Teko Ngaheke, labourer, residing at Bulls, said that on the Saturday prior to the shooting he saw accused acting peculiarly. Next morning he saw Ross when a good distance from accused’s house. Later he hear the report of a rifle and saw accused, who- appeared to have fired the shot, and Ross galloping away.
