“FAREWELL.”
MESSAGES TO AND FROM FLEET.
“ KINDNESS, COURTESY AND LOYALTY.” Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 19. The following wireless message has been sent to Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field by the Governor-General : iX You leave behind you ineffaceable and most pleasant memories. The children of New Zealand especially have seen something of that naval power which has afforded them protection in the past and which will give them security in the future. They are never likely to forget the deep impression made, apart from its educational aspect. The visit, too, will have strengthened the Imperial tie and promoted that unity eo essential to our welfare. Auckland skies and weather yesterday, in their attempt to delay the departures of the Special Service Squadron, gave an expression of the feelings of New Zealanders. On behalf of the Government and people 1 send the warmest good wishes for continued success in the important mission of the squadron, and a happy return home.” A wireless message from Vice-Ad-miral Field to his Excellency was received as follows: the Special Service Squadron, I beg to thank you for the most generous and inspiring message you have sent on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand. The kindess, courtesy and loyalty of the people have been an education to us, no less than the presence of the squadron has given them an opportunity of realising the importance of naval defence, if the security of the Empire is to be preserved. "We leave with many regrets, hut with the sure knowledge of having made many friends, whose kindness will he remembered for the rest of our lives.”
