FIRE AT HORNBY.
The five-roomed dwelling house of Mr J. Bennett on the Main South, Road, Hornby, near to the corner of Ranfurly Street was partly demolished by fire on Saturday evening. A neighbour, Mr J. Gundersell, ivhen passing Mr Benlnett’s house at about 6.20 p.m. noticed flames and smoke issuing from the back portion of the building. As he got no response to hi s knocking, ho concluded that the members of the family were all away from home. Some men were got together, a bucket brigade was sooin in operation, and after about hall an hour’s arduous work the fire was extinguished. The kitchen v-hich was at the rear of the house, was practically ruined and the sitting room and bedroom adjoining the kitchon were also affected by the flames. The family did inot return until after the fire had been extinguished. Fortunately. the house is well insured. The cause of the fire is unknown.
