The Te Whaka Plain Dance Assembly will hold a special long night dance in the Sydenham Football Hall tonight.

Mrs H. Coburn (llawera) has returned home after spending a holiday in Christchurch. During her stay she was the guest of Mr and Mrs H. T. Coburn, Richardson Street, Opawa. Miss Adeline M. Goodman, who has been on an extended visit to England, arrived in Christchurch on Wednesday morning. Miss Goodman. who has been studying with Mr William Shakespeare and Miss Mary Wilson, was successful ir.' gaining the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music and the Associate of the Royal College for teaching singing.

On Wednesday evening a surprise party was given at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. M’Caffrey, Ward Street, Addington, in honour of their daughter. Mrs J. W. Ball (Ada), who recently entered into the bonds of matrimony. It took the form of a “ kitchen evening,” and many useful presents were given. The organisers were Misses D. and E. West. A very enjoyable time was spent in games and competitions. Items were given by Mrs Down and Miss Bell, Miss S. Down and Messrs H. J. and E. H. Down. The Christchurch Juvenile Ckoir will give a concert early next month. Special praeti<*es are being held daring the holidays on Thursday mornings. A group of girls representing Hansel and Gre tel, the Sandman and fourteen angels are to perform the “Dream Pantomine” from the opera “Hansel and Gretel In the operetta “The Hours” the dresses worn by Dawn, Noon and Evening have been specially designed by the volunteer ladies’ committee. The other special feature is a humorous cantata by the boys of the choir entitled “The Frogs and the Ox.” On Tuesday evening. Mrs J. W. Raty,

“ Wahroonga,” Innes Road, St Albans, was hostess at a delightful “ kitchen evening,” given in honour of Miss Ivy Scott, who is shortly to be married. Miss Scott was the recipient of many very useful articles, and during the evening games, competitions and musical items were indulged in. The competitions were won by Misses Rene Moir, Dorothy Handisides, Alice Shelton and Everal Bull, and musical items were contributed by Miss Dorothy Handisides and Miss Ivy Scott and recitations by Miss Mavis Baty. Among those present were : Mrs J. W. Baty, Misses Nita, Mavis and Lilia Baty, Ivy Scott, Muriel Moir, Dorothy Handisides, Rene Moir, Josephine Duncan, Olive Derrick, Jessie Sharp, Ella Madden, Maria Banfield, Manuela Banfield, Alice Shelton, Violet Guy, Everal Bull, Vern Lye and Hazel Walton.

A very enjoyable “pantry evening” was given recently at the Hastings Street Hall, Sydenham, by the employees of Messrs Wilkinson and Andrews to Miss Belle Campbell, who is leaving shortly to bo married. The master of ceremonies was Mr Darby, and Mr Hayes supplied the music for dancing aind games. An extra was played by Mr W. Mather Miss Campbell was the recipient of many useful, articles, which were presented by Mr Oates. Mr AA*. Worsdell responded oh bebalf of Miss Campbell. Miss G. Bellany and Mr P. Gibbons contributed musical items. Tho prizes for musical chairs were won by Mr L. Burgess and Miss Arnold; the spot waltz by Mr Bellamy and Miss E. Shackel ; the ex - tra spot waltz by Miss P. Arnold. The success of the evening was due largely

to Mr S. Oates, junior, and the Misses Salt, Georgensein, Thompson and Topping, who helped with the supper arrangements. The Palais Royal Jazz Club held a carnival damce last "Wednesday evening at the Albert Hall which bad been decorated for the occasion with the club’s colours, blue and gold. About sixty guests were present. Willvams’s Jazz Band supplied the music. Among those present were:—Mrs Hull, pink taffetas; Mrs A. On Wednesday evening -‘The Queen of the Oak ’ Ladies’ Lodge entertained Sister Peryer, who has been the sick visitor of the lodge for mauv years. at a social evening. The evening was pleasantly spent in games and competitions. tho competitions being won by Miss Frances Morgan and Mr Furneaux. Items wore contributed by Arch Druidess E. Preddv. Mrs J. E. Hawkins returned to her honie in May’s Road from Invercargill, where she has been paying several visits.

The engagement is announced of Miss Annie (Peggy) Mirel, daughter of Mr Robert Robinson, eldest son of Mr John Robrt Robinson, eldest son of Mr John. Robinson (Christchurch).

A special long night carnival dance will be held on Monday at the St Asaph Street Hall. It will be the opening night of a series of Monday night dances by the Christchurch Plain Dance Assembly.

Tho ladies of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association have issued invitations for a bridge evening on Wednesday at the Jellieoe Hall, in aid of tho AVilding Park Fund. Miss R. M. Edwards, acting sub matron of Holly Lea, has been ap pointed sub-matron of Quamby, vice Miss B. M. Hayward, whose resignation was received at the INl’Lean Institute Board meeting yesterday.

The students of the Honours Class in History at Canterbury College held a reception in Ballantvne’s tea rooms yesterday in honour of Dr J. Hight and his assistant. Miss Alice Candy. Mrs Hight and Miss Doreen Hight were also invited to be present. Dr Higlit was the recipient of a presentation from the students as a token of their esteem, and Miss Candy’s good work was praised and a present given to her.

Mrs Blunt, who for nearly fourteen years ha»s been president of the Christchurch branch ot the British and Foreign Sailors’ Institute, and Mrs Heathcote Grey, who was honorary secretary, were entertained at tea at Ballantyne’s yesterday by Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, the newly elected president, and the ladies of the committee. They had both rendered invaluable services to the work and will be greatly missed. As they intend residing in the country foi tho future they were obliged to resign. Among those present were Mrs Treleaven, Mrs George Hanmer, Mrs J. Vernon. Mrs Webb, Mrs J. S. Thompson, Mrs Carey, Mrs Fountain, Mrs Wood, Mrs Bakewell, Mrs H. Hamilton and Miss Fraer. SOUTH CANTERBURY NOTES. Mr and Airs H. Hay, Sealy Street, hare returned from a motor trip to Nelson. Miss Margaret Anderson, who is tho guest of Mrs J. P. Newman, Moana, will go back to Christchurch to-dav. Miss Marshall, Wellington, is staying with Airs L. J. AYilliamson, Le Cren’s Terrace, Timaru.

A very successful ball was held in the Caroline Bay Hall by the committee of the S.P.C.A. Society on Thursday night.
