Representing the New Brighton Council were the Mayor and Mrs Gamble, Councillor and Mrs Aluirson, Councillor anti Mrs Shaw, Councillors Scott aiul Buxton, the Town Clerk and Mrs Ai’Clure. HOSPITAL, AND DOMAIN LEVIES. The usual mild protests were made by councillors when the letters from the Christchurch Hospital Board, in intimating an increase in the levies for the years 1924-1925, were read at the council meeting on Monday night. In the case of the Domain Board the increase is al>out. £l2, and for the Hospital Board £llO 10s. The regulation which permits of the imposition of these levies’ and mandatory. and it appears anything but an equitable arrangement when a levy of some £4O is made upon the New Brighton borough lor the Christchurch Domain. when the domains and reserves in the borough are languishing for lack of money. The amount t» be raised for hospital and charitable j aid purposes is over W.E.A. The season's session of the W.E.A. was commenced in the Methodist Church schoolroom on Thursday, when Mr G. Manning (Canterbury organiser) delivered a lecture entitled ‘'Education and De.mbcracy.” There was a good attendance and a number of enrolments took place. Mr J. Al’Alillen. 191, Richmond Terrace, was appointed secretary. Mr A. H. Tockef, M.A., of Canterbury College, will lecture next Thursday at 8 p.m., the subject being “ The present Economic Problems of New* Zealand.” The . Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) will preside. A | splendid library is available for stuI dents, and the class is free to everybody desiring a wider knowledge. The ! discussion wnich follows each lecture i is always interesting. It is especially desired that at least twenty-five students should enrol, so that New Brighton can obtain the regular ser--1 vices of Mr Tocker. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The New' Brighton branch of the Plunket Society met on Thursday. Mrs J. Gamble presiding. The annual re-

port and statement of receipts and expenditure were presented. Sixty I members had paid subscriptions in the past year, and this money had been lorwarded to the Christchurch committee. A credit balance of £5 11s 7d remained. New scales had been purchased, owing to the old ones having been found to be incorrect. The nurse now visited New Brighton on two afternoons weekly. Nurse Wilson addressed the meeting on the w'ork done during the year. She stressed the necessity for a permanent Plunket nurse for the district, stating that the work had more than doubled, and that it was impossible for. a visiting nurse to give the mothers and babies all the attention they required. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President. Mrs W. T. Glasgow ; vice-president, Mrs Bellamy ; committee, Mesdames Gamble. Hillier, Chris. Smith. Dixon. Traov and Marlaverty, and Nurse Miles, with power to add. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mrs Gamble. Nurse Wilson and the Library Committee. The new financial year has started well in the. matter of the issue of building permits. For the month of April, the first month of the new year, twenty-two permits to the value of £3IOO were granted. For the same period last year the number was thirteen, and the value £1935. BALANCE OF LOAN EXPENDITURE. 1 At a special meeting of the council held on May 1 the allocation of the balance of the £52,000 loan was considered. the storm and waste water from Norion Street through the domain to the river via Pratt Street is to be. commenced forthwith. This matter has been too long delayed, anil it is gratifying to know that the work is now to he tackled in earnest. A special loan of £2OOO is being arranged for drainage work, and not only will the matter above referred to be undertaken, but the outfall drain from Park Road Central to the river will be attended to as soon as possible. The council decided to do the work by day labour

under the supervision of its own .staff Some criticism has been made at the proposal to carry a channel through the domain from the north hut after giving the matter close consideration the borough engineer (Mr F. Freeman) has decided that there is no alternative to this route for dealing with the water which converges from many points upon Norton Street. LIGHTING SEA VIEW ROAD. The work of swinging lamps in the centre of Sea View Road has commenced. The oine hundred candle power lamps now at the side of th road are to he replaced by two hundred and fifty candle power lamps in the centre.
