THE NEW WALLPAPERS.
(By MRS HAMILTON. > The vogue of the uu patterned wallpnper lias passed, if •no are to judge by the pattern-books displayed by the leading firms. The nearest approach to plainness taken the form of paper in self-tones, but with n surface se glossy and shining that it gives the impression of having been created by a coat of enamel paint. This year is to see the evolution of panel papers. Each panel is sufficient unto itself, the patterning, instead of meandering over an entire wall-space, being confined to each strip, so that you get the effect of a series of repeated designs all round the room. The designs are usually tapering in shape, and take the form of trees, Cupolas, hanging baskets of flowers storks and rushes, mountain tops or mossy forest glades. The Japanese influent*© predominate* in other papers. Some of them
might have gone straight to Hiroshige j and Hokusai, the famous designers of j Japanese prints. for inspiration. Quaint little processions of figures, soothing streams of i**llucid blue, wondrous birds and beasts, and lovely cloud effects are found among these paper*, so decorative in their richness < f design and colouring. Paper bordering* ore iramenselv effective, and should do much to com ter character on the walls. Stencilled effects are still in evidence, black designs on cogee-coloured grounds and white on jade green or mauve, proving particular! v acceptable. All tones of mauve and lavender aro to the fore among the new wall papers, and “ paint to match” is ad vised by the experts. The great advantage! ot this tint is that it allows ;m immense range of choice among the minor accessories. To the womau interested in public work, the knowledge of the duties of secretary to a committee, a literary I society or similar body, is invaluable. (
