THE FASHION FOR BLACK.
If someone from the backwoods or the very depths of the country has visited London during this year he has probably thought, on first seeing London women, that they were a natiou of mourners, so universal lias been the wearing of black. The fashion came from Paris, as most fashions do, some months ago. but no one expected that it would make such a wide appeal or remain popular so long. Everywhere one could see almost a uniform of long, slim black coats, little black cloche hats, and a string of pearls—real or imitation—generally the latter. The reason for the popularity of black is that everyone found it becoming, for black suits nearly all women. It was useful ; and to those who had to practice economy it appealed, too, for it was so easy to make one dress or hat do the part of two when everything worn was the same colour, and it was equally simple to disguise the fact that you had only one frock —for nobody remembers a black frock! Also its popularity in London may have been due to the fact that-it . did not show the dirt.
