GILBERT IN HIS TWENTY-EIGHTH YEAR.

Mr .T. Ashworth, whose interesting reminiscences were recently published in the “ Star,” credits the third of his possessions to the faithful services of Gilbert. Purchased in 1860 for £65, when at the age of four years, he worked first on the roar! and afterwards on the farm for twenty-eight years, and ever proved staunch and reliable. When thirty-two years of age his end came suddenly. He was lying down in a field, and evidently hearing his master walking along the road close by, he raised his head, and, giving a loud neigh, died without a struggle. It will be of interest to add that Gilbert won three that prizes at the first show of the Northern A. and P. Association, held in December, 1866. (Photo, lent by Mr Ashwortn.)
