CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK Bv Our Special Correspondent

PARISH MEETING. The vicar, the Rec E. C. W. Powell, presided over the annual meeting oi parishioners. The people’s warden, Air IJ. G. Wood, presented the annual report and balance-sheet. Rc-i-eipis were £5Bl 4s Bd, and expenditure £oo2 Os 10d. Tlio warden’s report showed that the Parochial Association had clone excellent work, including a. gift of £lO towards repairs. The vicar referred to the mission of spiritual healing Mr Edmund Clark’s mission, and tlio visit of the Bishop of Dornakal. Valuable help had been contributed by Sunday school teachers, parochial association, flower and brass guild, magazine distributors, lay readers, social committee, choir, organists and Mothers’ Union. Missionary contributions totalled £lB5 12s, and the number of communicants increased by over GOO. The folowing officers were elected : —Mr C. Benjamin, bishop’s Warden; Air E. G. Wood, people’s warden ; vestry. Messrs W. Bailey. H. A. Bruce. J. F. Buxton, ,T. M. B. Crawford. F. T. Eldridge, C. Forrest. F. H. Mathews, A. Alacara. D. W. Teppett and H. L. AYiggins ; audtor, Mr C. L. "Wiggins. VALEDICTORY. The farewell gathering in honour of Mr G. \V r . C. Smithson was one of the most representative and enthusiastic recorded in the Jiistory of the l>orough. The Mayor, Air W. H. Nicholson, presided, and amongst those present were Air if. J. Alarriner, ex-xviayor; exOouncillors Messrs T. B. Boulton and J. L). Lawrence; Councillors M. C. Jamieson, H. C. Jones, J. H. Thomas, T'. C. Cooper and P. Dick ; and representatives from all the sports bodies and tho Burgesses’ Association. The toast list was as follows: “ Borough Council,” Mr J. M. B. Crawford; ‘‘ Ivindred Sports,” president of Burgesses’ Association, Rev W. AX’Ara ;

“Our Guest.” the Alayor; “ Our Wives and Families.” Air G. F. Allen, president of United Sports’ Association. Replies were made by Mr F. A. Tapson, cricket; Air P. Dick, football; Air N. Barlow, tennis; 11. C. Raphael, J. M. B. Crawford and F. 8. Aiarrie, golf : Air J .C. Al’Donald life saving; and Superintendent J. Carter, Volunteer File Brigade. Speaking for the bowling club, the president, Air T. C. Evans, eulogised Air Smithson’s early ‘ efforts on behalf of tho club. They were losing a most valued member who would get a warm welcome whenever, he returned. The club wished him every success. During the evening tho Alayor presented Air Smithson with a | watch engraved with a monogram. ! Their guest’s departure from Sumner, he said, was regretted by everybody. Nothing he could say would express the kind thoughts add grateful reelings going out to Air and Airs Smithson and family. Air H. J. Alarriner referred to Air Smithson’s consistent and successful work as a past councillor and Mayor. He had played a great part in tho progress of the borough during the past fifteen years. Mr Smithson, in replying, said it was difficult to find words adequate to express his thanks for tho great kindness shown to him. He felt that he had only done his duty as a citizen. Ho especially appreciated the references made to Airs Smithson who. with him, at the outbreak of the war. had had a very strenuous time. He was very proud of Sumner, and he thanked them all most cordially, especial]v for their attendance that evening. A” nrogramme was contributed bv Alessrs H C. Wilson, F. H. Alathews, Campbell, Cox. Forrest, Smith. G. F. Aden and \V. F. Raphael and Smithson. Air P. Dick contributed a popular item on council procedure. SEA SCOUTS. The annual meeting of ihe SumnerRedcliffs Sea Scouts disclosed a very proniising state of affairs. Tlio election of officers resulted as follows: Chairman, Air H. J. Alarriner: treasurer. Air F. H. cdoking, Mrs R. Ogien. The following names were added to the old com;t ittee, 'Messrs W. H. Nicholson, C. S. Booth and Miis If. 11. Mathews. The work done by the scoutmasters was specially referred to and a vote of thanks was passed. MARINE BAND. > The Sumner Marine Band is now in a position to let, the public hear «. public performance of its junior section. This will be incorporated in a band concert to be given to-morrow at 3 p.m. The junior band was formed some ton weeks ago and up to the present time it has had not more than twenty lessons. The surprising progress made by many of the lads may be in p..rt due to natural ability, but there is no mistaking toe fact that they have been faithfully taught by capable and enthusiastic teachers. CRICKET CLUB. The Cricket Club's social, which was postponed on account of the farewell to Mr Smithson, wiil ho hold next r»th. BABIES’ HOME. The formal opening of the St Saviour’s Home for Babies was held last Saturday, wheat a largo attendance of residents and visitors was recorded. The Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson addressing the gathering, expressed the pleasure of the residents at the opening of the institution in the borough, and he felt sure the residents could always be relied upon for practical help and sympathy. His Grace Archbishop Julius thanked the Mayor for his remarks and outlined the growth of St Saviour’s work. The Babies’ Home was the last link in the chain, and it would now be possible to care for the children from birth up. During the afternoon the handsome building and its inmates were inspected by those present. Sister Ounnington received many congratulations upon the occasion, and, expressing her gratitude for gifts received, stated that the present need was for small chairs. Already offers of' Tielp from interested people have been received and the institution has a promising career before it. FOR THE CHILDREN.

While the classes, at the Sunnier School were enjoying a few concert items on breaking-up day ain instru mental trio, cornet, tenor trombone and .slide trombone, was unearthed in Standard IV. The performance was so : good that inquiries were made throughout the school, a'nd in a couple of hours’ time a small band of eight instruments gave three items at the conclusion of the flag saluting ceremony. The performance was a great surprise, and it is hojied to continue something of the sort in the future. All the lads were junior members of the Sumner Marine Band, and proved a great credit to their training. REDCLIFFS NOTES. At xho annual meeting of the St Andrew’s Mission Room an opportunity was taken to express the parishioners’ appreciation of the work of Mrs E. W. Pidgeon, first president of the Women’s Guild, and Mr F. C. Airs, churchwar - den. The vicar, Rev E. C. W. Powell, in presenting each of the guests with small mementoes of their work, spoke of the willingness always manifested to further the work of the Church in Redcliffs. Mr G. Stening also made appreciative reference to the departing guests. The following contributed to a musical programme that helped to make a very pleasant evening:—Mr Kempt home, Mrs Vernal, Miss Barbour. Miss .T. Coleman, Miss Proctor. The Rev O. Fitzgerald, vicar of A von side, is to preach in the Mission Room at the evening service to-morrow.
