THE GIRL GUIDES.

A most enthusiastic meeting took place yesterday afternoon, in the Jockey Club’s room, of the local association of Girl Guides, recently formed in Christchurch. Mrs Studholme presided, and detailed the preliminary arrangements made when Mrs "Wilson, the organising commissioner lor Now Zealand, was in Christchurch some weeks ago. The Hon Mrs Tali a Rhodes wore her smart uniform of navy blue, with pockets and lapels, ser- | viceable and workmanlike, a white silk j shirt and collar and nary blue tie, a leather belt round her waist, and leather gauntlets, and a navy blue hat, smartly turned up on one side, with a silver clamp and silver shoulder cords, denoted her rank of Provincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides. She gave on account of the aims and objects of the movement. It was unnecessary to say what- a success it had been in Engand, since it was instituted by Lady Baden-Powell, and Princess Mary took such an enthusiastic interest in it. There was every reason to believe it would bo popular here Th© training alone would be advantageous to girls—teaching them to love nature, animals, child welfare, games, thrift, cooking, and many other good things. ° Those who qualified for officers would, of course, have to be welleducated and possess the qualifications of leaders. Mrs Studholme is chairwoman of th© committee. Mrs Honder-son-Begg, vice-chair woman, and Mrs Norton-Francis, Airs Flesher. Lacly Rhodes and Mrs Irving were appointed vice-presidents.. The following are members of the local committee : Mrs Hannah, Mrs Jellefct, Mrs Beckett, Mrs H. T. J. Thacker. Miss Julius and Miss Sanders. Miss Brom-ley-Cocks was appointed honorary secretary and treasurer, and Miss Foster the provincial honorary secretary Sho wears a smart uniform and on her hat is a red cockade. She also wears a badge with crossed pens embroidered on it.. The members wear a pretty little silver trefoil badge. Miss Laura Tabart has been from the first the Deus ex Machina. Among the ladies present were Mesdames Flesher, Studholme. Thacker, Hehderson-Begg, H. S'.. C. Turner. Deans, Hanmer. Allen, Norton. Hubert Jones. Bristed. Dun- j can, Scott, Cane, Seth-Smith. D. ; Scott, Hannah, Wright. Wait, j M’Clean, W. Moore, Irving, H. Lough- j nan. Duncan. A eland, Petrie, Jellett, j T. Gibson, Gould, the Misses TabarA Foster. Julius. Benians. Reeves, Mul- : raney Gray, Boyle and Elliot. After- I noon tea was handed round after the close of the meeting.
