The engagement is announced of Miss Betty Ferguson, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs A. W. Ferguson (Auckland) to Mr Mervyn Reed, only son of Mr Justice and Mrs Reed (Auckland).

Mr Alf. J. Lawrence, who has been club captain of the Sydenham Cricket Club for a great many years, and Mrs Lawrence, vill entertain the members of the club at a social evening ill Dixieland on Tuesday next. A succesful euchre party and dance was held in the Ridglev Hall, Armagh Street, on Thursday- under the auspices of the Armagh Euchre and Dance Club. The prize winners were:-—Ladies, Mrs Baxter 1. A meeting was li£ld on Tuesday evening by the Selwyn division of the St John Ambulance Brigade in tho brigade rooms. There was a very good attendance, and iho lady superintendent, Mrs H. H. Smith, presided. \ lecture was given by the divisional surgeon, and was much. appreciated by tho members.

Alajor and Airs Leopold Al’Laglau will arrive in Christchurch shortly fiom England. Airs Al’Lagian 's well known in New Zealand as Dr Eleanor Baker, and for some- tjme she lias been a school medical inspector. Recently she went to England to do some further study, and while there she married Major AI Laglan. In the early days of the war Major M'Laglan, then a captain, wa§ in Christchurch. He gave jujitsu demonstrations arid showed his prowess in other directions. On her marriage, Mrs M'Laglan resigned her position as school inspector, but the Government offered to keep it open for her, and she has accepted this offer.

The funeral of little Gracie Sandford. the youngest child of Air and Airs S. Sandford. or New Brighton Road Burwood,* showed in a marked degree the extent to which the little girl had already endeared herself to the people there in a few short months. A choir of tho girl scholars of the Burwood Anglican Sunday School sang “ Safe in the Arms of Jesus ” at the conclusion of the service, which was conducted by the Rev C. A. Tobin. Many beautiful wreaths wore received, including one from the Burwood School Committee and one from the Naomi Lodge. 1.0.0. F., of which Airs Sandford was tor sonic time a prominent member, and there were several pretty litt-lo floral tributes from playmates and schoolmates. .Mr and Airs Sandford have the v-arm sympathy of the neighbours and friends in the loss of their little girl. The United Swimming Club held a delightful dance at Dixieland last night. There was a very large attendance and the committee had made excel lent arrangements. The rooms v.ere tastefully decorated and a dainty supper was served at small tables decKed with coloured chrysanthemums.
