The romances and some of the hardships of the early shipping days of New Zealand are recalled in the series of articles now being published in the “ Star ” relating to the early shipping days. The article printed to-day consists of extracts from th© early files. ARRIVAL OF THE W AIM ATE. (From th© “Lyttelton Times,” February 25, 1880.) Arrived. February 24. 1880, Waimate, ship, 1124 tons, Peek, from London. New Zealand Steam Ship Co, agents. The New Zealand Steamship Company’s ship Wairaate, Captain Peek, from London arrived yesterday morning. On tho vessel’s arrival it was reported that she had measles on board, and on th© Health Officer going down it was found that there had been 14 cases of measles during the passage, and there were two cases under treatment at the present time. The ship was then ordered into quarantine and the yellow flag hoisted. The Waimate brings 20 saloon, 23 second cabin and 100 steerage passengers, all of whom have, with the exception of the 14 cases of measles mentioned, enjoyed good health. The following are the ascertainable particulars or the passage : Left the South-West India Docks at 9 a.m. on November 26 and Gravesend on November 27. Cast off from the tug and landed pilot next day. Took final departure from the land on November 29, passed Madeira December 6, had no north-east trades and crossed the Equator on December 29, 30 days from land. The south-east trades were good. Passed Trinidad 6 a.m. January 6. Gough’s Island January IS and the CVozets January 31. The Snares were passed at 9.30 a.m. on February 21, with n, hard southerly gale and at- 1 a.m. February 22 the Waimate was off Otago Heads. Since then had baffling winds up the coast. Made the Peninsula on. Sunday night nnd anchored at 8.30 a.m. yesterday, 88 days from Deal, and 83 days from land to land.
