Mr W. Macfarlano (North Canterbury) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Muriel Vigors (Ashburton) is a guest at the United Service Hotel. Miss Marion Reese (Fendalton) is visiting Mrs A. Long (Timaru). Mrs P, J. Lindsay (Ashley Bank'' and her two boys are spending a- short holiday at Okains Bay. Mrs J. W. Duke (Christchurch) is visiting Mrs J. A. Petrie, “Kylestou,” Ashley Bank. Mrs Hollis (Jeffreys Road) has gone to Wellington to stay with her aunt, and uncle, Lord and Lady Strathspey. Mr and Mrs W. Grey, who have been staying at Warner’s Hotel, returned to Dunedin this morning. Mr and Mrs W. R. Yeoman (Syd ney), who have been spending a week in Christchurch, left for Dunedin. Mr and Mrs D. V. Donaldson are leaving for Wellington to-morrow for a week’s holiday. Miss Gwendoline Jellett (Fendalton) has gone to Rotheram to stay with Mr* Roger Gould. Mr and Mrs S. W. Dean (Sumner) are at pre'sent in I/ondon. and will bo returning to New Zealand in November. Mr and Mrs Arthur Nichols, who have bee i staying at the .United Service Hotel, are leaving lor their home at Kunheka to-diy. Mr and Airs Robert Perry, with Miss V. Vandersaelen and Miss G. Parsons, arrived from Kaikoura yesterday, and are guests at the United Service Hotel. A meeting of the Christchurch Girl Guides’ Association takes place this afternoon in the Jockey Club’s rooms, Oxford Terrace. Airs Studholme. president of tho association, will be in the chair. Miss Baker, lady editor of tho “ Sporting and Dramatic Review,” Auckland, and Miss O. Bcker are on a visit to their brother, Mr Allan Baker, Bank of New Zealand, Grey., mouth. The engagement is announced of Miss Betty Ferguson, elder daughter of Air and Airs A. W. Ferguson (Auckland) to Air Mervyn Reed, only son of Mr Justice and Mrs Reed (Auckland).

The Rev C. A. Fraer reports that tho collection for the S.P.W.G. amounted to £l7l 14s 3d yesterday. Airs E. J. Oordner and her children aro spending the school holidays at Timaru.

A meeting of the Ladies’ Sewing Guild was held in the parish room./ Hororata, on Tuesday afternoon, Alias Roberts presiding over a good atten dance of members. It was decided to hold a Home Dainties Afternoon in. June, and to collect gifts of homemade cakes, sweets and produce. The function is being organised to raise funds to pay for materials for the Sewing Guild*. Tho stall-holders will fce :—Needlework, Alesdames M’Gregor and Gray; produoe, Alesdames Pratt and Jones; sweets, Miss Roberts and G.F.S ; afternoon tea, Alesdames Kellaway, Pickering and Miss Powell. The members of the Christchurch Toy Dog and Cat Association held the first of a series of monthly socials at Dixieland last night. About thirty members were present, including Mrs Chisholm, wife of the president, Alesdames Bosworth, Bell. Woods, F. D. Jackson, Mathew.. M’Cleod, N. Jackson. Radford. May, Nightingale, Hammond, Fantham, Gracie, Aliss Rogers and Nurse Frances. A game of progressive euchre, was played, Airs P. D. Jackson winning the first prize. A copper tea-pot stand and a China sweet dish. Mr Hammond won the gentleman’s prize, Airs Gracie the first booby prize and Air Stevens the second. Supper was served after the presentation of tho prizes.

A well attended meeting of the Home Economics Association was held iji the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night. Tho president. Mrs Cooper, said that on May 30 a handcraft evening would be held when a demonstration of china painting, mat making and silk stockings would be given. Aliss Gee. of Misses Hanna and Gee gave a very instructive exhibition of millinery, making a plush hat and different styles of trimming namely rosettes, fans, bows and cabachons. A heiarty vote of thanks was given her at the close of the meeting and also Mr Hulton, or Sydenham, who made the tireless cooker and fitted up the model kitchen at the previous meeting.

On Tuesday evening the Ashley schoolroom was the scene of a jolly party, when the residents paid a surprise visit to Air Owen W. Williams. It ’being a beautiful night, there was a very large gathering, and young and old i.>ined in the numerous games. Recitations were given by Miss Josie Baird. The lucky spot waltzes were won by Aliases Thelma Robertson and Thelma Peach, and Messrs. Jack Holbrough and R. Peach. The music for the games and dances was contributed by Airs Petrie. Misses Eileen Bowbyes, Vera E. Steel, and Alessrs Kennedy Owen, W. Williams and Whitham. while Mr S. Smith acted as M.C. The party was brought to a close by ; ‘Auld Lang Syne” and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,’’ after which Air. Williams thanked the people for giving him such a pleasant time.
