“THIS STYLE—CHEAP.”
BY
SINBAD.
A student wandered up to me, with countenance most dull and drear; “Why should 1 strive and toil,” said he, “ for thirty weeks throughout the year, until I’ve Avon me a degree, and in a hood and cap* appear? Why should I burn the midnight oil, and frozen rooms in winter seek, or strive examiners to foil in mathematics, say, or Greek ; Avhat is the use of all this toil, these lectures long throughout each week? All useless labour is a Avastc of irrecoverable time; yet oft professors I have faced, and studied works of English rhyme, and labs, my presence oft has graced, until the clocks of noon-day chime. What does it profit me to-day? No end of study do I see: examiners, as is their Ayay, show quite a lack oF sympathy; now, if I lived in U.S.A. I’d jolly soon have a degree. To Kansas City 1 would go, for halls of learning there appear ; I’d sign a register or so, and toil no long and weary year; I’d be, in half an hour or so. a full-bloAvn quack or engineer.”
