A TIMELY RESCUE.
(Special to the " Star.’’) AUCKLAND, May 10. Fortunately the harbour incident on Tuesday night, which mystified so many p-ople at Northcote and Birkenhead, was unattended with a fatal result, as was feared by rescue parties from across the water. The man concerned, however, had a most trying experience in the extremely cold Mater, am 4 was greatly exhausted when rescued. It appears that while engaged in arranging a ton-line from the launch Te Hauraki to a punt, when outside the western wharf, the driver, Air Sinton, fell overboard. Though he swam to both launch and punt in turn, lie could climb up neither so he clung to a rope from the punt for half an hour. His cries attracted tho attention of officers on the steamer "Waimarino (berthed at the western wharf), who went to his assistance in a dinghy, releasing him from a most perilous situation about eleven o’clock. The night Mas so still that the cries were plainly heard at Northcote' and Birkenhead, where the impression prevailed that the calls came from the water close to the respective waterf routs.
