MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. I (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowaon, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A statutory first offender was fined 10s, in default Twenty-four hours* imprisonment. THREATENING BEHAVIOUR -William Percival Old and Patrick Hayes were charged with using threatening behaviour in St Asaph Street, thereby committing a breach of the peace. Hayes did not appear, having been bailed out the previous night. Constable Hughes gave evidence to the effect that the two men were fighting in Manchester Street shortly after G p.m. last evening. Both were sober. Old was fined 20s and costs, in de fault seven days’ imprisonment, an i Hayes 40s and costs, in default ten days’ imprisonment. REMANDED. Clarence Michael Woodward was remanded to appear at Kaiapoi on Mav 19 on a charge of having stolen the sum of £5 from Royce Nicholls at Coutts’s Island. Sergeant Roach said that there were five other charges against accused. ON LICENSED PREMISES. Arthur Stratford was charged with having been found on the licensed premises of Storey’s Hotel after hours. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Roach said defendant had been caught on the premises at 10.55 am. on Sunday last. He had a long beer in front of him at the bar. Defendant said he, had just walked into the hotel and seeing the bah open went in. He was followed by the sergeant and constable. He certainly had a long glass of beer in front of him but it did not belong to him. The magistrate: Who did it belong to? What about the licensee? Johnson (Mr Connal) for groceries supplied. After hearing the evidence of both .parties judgment was entered for plaintiff for the amount claimed with costs, solicitor’s fee and witnesses’ expenses. BREACH OF AWARD. For employing a non-unionist and failing to notify the secretary of the union of the engagement Henry Charles Fergusson, painter and decorator, Victoria. Street- was fined 10s. Defendant, admitted the fact® stated by the Inspector of Awards, T. G. Fielder.
