ASHBURTON ATHLETIC CLUB. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, May 14. The Ashburton Athletic Club's first mem Hers uight. of the season was held At the Theatre Royal to-night. The club nw an increasingly strong membership, and this was exemplified by the large attendance ’ The sport provided was particularly fine and well up to the club's high standard and the good clean fighting was frequently the subject of comment by the club authorities and visitors. Gripe nud W and the referr Mr H. J. Dillon. Results:— FLIGHT-WEIGHT NOVICE. T Parker (Christohuroh), 9sfc 131 b. de feated M. M’Avey (Ashburton), 9st 101 b. Parker (Christchurch). 9st 131 b, defeated S Hughes (Ashburton), lost. BANTAM NOVICE. Moulton (Temuka). 7st 13lb. defeated An draws (Christchurch), Bst lllb. WELTER-WEIGHT NOVICE. E. Diggs (Christchurch), lost 6lb, defeated D. O'Reilly (Hinds). 9st 13lb. FLY-WEIGHT MATCH (four two-minute rounds). C. Brosnahan (Ashburton). 7st 101 b, de feated E. Ives (Temuka), 7at bib. The bout opened with fast work, both showing a creditable amount of acienc* Ives countered well at times, but ho was not as fast a« his opponent. In the second round the local lad scored freely with both hands and forced all the way. Occasionally Ives got in some nie wor«c with the right and connected with the left, but the round was easilv Broanahan’s. Tu the third session Brosnahan repeatedly landed with straight lefts and occasionally with an upper-cut. In the final round Brosnahan attacked all tho time. Ives fought gamely but the full term disclosed that he was outclassed and Brosnaliau recorded as winner. WELTEE-WEIGHT MATCH (fix twominute rounds). A Thompson (Christchurch), lost Stb. de feated F. Renner iWellington), lOst clb, in the third round. The first round was lacking in Thompson doing most of the leading. In tho second round both had landed some good blows. Thompson sent Renner down for a count of nine with heavy right, the Wellington man taking full advantage of tho count. In the third round Thompson opened aggressively and in some heavy work got in a stinging right cross and seut Renner down for the full count. LIGHT-WEIGHT MATCHES (six twominute rounds). L. Sutherland (Dunedin). 9st 101 b. defeated A. Argyle (Ashburton), 9st Clb. T. Armstrong (Christchurch). Get 2lb, defeated A. Wallace (Temuka), 9at Ulb, in the third round. The first round opened very willingly and solid in-fighting was the order. Argyle boring in persistently, and Sutherland connected with heavy rights to the body. Sutherland adhered to these tactics in the second and third rounds, and Argyle took a. good amount of punishment. Sutherland also held a slight advantage in the fourth round. In the fifth he showed signs of hia efforts, but Argyle showed no signs of distress and was much the stronger In tho sixth, in which he landed telling blows. The decision went to Sutherland. The bout between Armstrong and Wallace opened quietly. Armstrong, although at a disadvantage in reach, was more aggressive. There was some pretty twobanded fighting in the second round, in which Wallace countered well, however, and points were fairlv even at the close of tho second round. Half way through the third rqund, in a lively passage. Armstrong got in a right cross which sent Wallace down for tho count. BANTAM MATCH (six three-minute rounds). T. Griffiths (Dunedin), Bst 21b, defeated M. Carroll (Wellington), Bst 21b. Griffiths is bantam champion of New Zealand, and Carroll champion of the North Island. The bout opened at a fast pace and it was soon evident that the Dunedin lad was by far the clevener boxer. Carroll frequently left himself open and Griffiths got through with both hands. In the second round Carroll re--gisbtred a. hard left to Griffiths's face and followed It up well, but Griffiths scored repeatedly with his left. Carroll’s defence improved in the third round, and he did •otne smart leading, but Griffiths still succeeded in getting throngh with his left and his ducking and feinting were pretty to watch Honours were fairly even in the _ fourth round.
