Miss! Noni Beckett has gone to Palmerston North to stay with liw aunt, Mrs Goldingham. Mrs J. L. Wilson (Rossall Street), Fendalton, is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs H. Biundell, at Carterton.

Miss Eleanor F. 'Wells, of Columbia University, New York, has accepted the position of dietitian at Dunedin Hospital, says a Press Association message. Mr and Mrs Dam pier-Tripe (Nelson) and Miss Cave, who have been staying at the Clarendon Hotel for a fev days, left this morning for the south. Miss Manger, London, and Miss Carr-f Walker, Harrogate, England, who are touring New Zealand, are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs J. The /engagement is announced of Miss Margaret Grant-Mackie (Peggy) elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Grant-Mackie, Christchurch, to Mr David Ramsey Mansfield, son of the late Registrar-General, Mr F. W. Mansfield, of Khandallah, Wellington A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs Collins, Edgbware Road, St Albans, on Wednesday, the occasion being the birthday of Miss Rita Howard, of Marshland. A large number of friends were present, who greatly enjoyed a varied programme of vocal and musical items and. games. Miss Ellen Terry, the celebrated actress, who6© whole career has been a triumph of ..talent, charm and beauty, was seventy-six last month. She jives in London now with her daughter, Miss Edith Craig. Ellen Terry made her debut in 1800, under Charles Kean’s management as Mamilius hi “ The Winter’s Tale,” and her last appearance on the stage was at the end of 1920. She will always be remembered for her impersonations of Shakespeare’s heroines. Her Juliet, Portia and Beatrice wew unsurpassed. We saw her here some years ago, when her wonderful memory was failing and she read extracts from her great parts from a boblc, printed in very large type, for her eyesight, too, was failing, but ago can never rob her of her irresistible charm.

The Addington Rugby League Football Club held a successful plain and fancy dress dance in tho Sehyyn Street Hall recently. About forty visitors from Pleasant Point were among those present, Mr W. A dance was given in the Rolleston Street Hall on Friday evening by Mr and Mrs Terris, in honour of their daughter May’s eighteenth birthday. The dancing room was decorated with lemon and salmon coloured streamers. The supper-room had three long tables decorated with autumn flowers, with lemon and salmon coloured streamers down the centre of the table. The birthday-cake, with its eighteen candles made a dainty effect. Early in the evening musical items were given, after which dancing took place in the main hall, the music being supplied by Miss Tilleyshort's orchestra. Mr A. Winter proposed the toast of Miss Terris, while Mrs Terris suitably responded on behalf of her daughter. Mrs Terris wore a becoming gown of navy blue taffetas, daintily trimmed with georgette. Mr and Mrs J. C. Guinness, and Miss G. Guinness, who have been at the Hydro Grand for a few days, motored back to Te Pune, Fairlie, on Sunday. On Saturday Mrs and the Misses Edgar-Jones, gave an afternoon tea at the Hydro Grand to Mrs J. C. Guinness. Those, present included Mrs E. D. Giles, Mrs G. V. Gerard, Mrs Frank Barker, Mrs C. E. Thomas, Mrs J. Temple, Mrs Heftry Harper and Jean, Mrs E. J. Cordner with Quita and Sheila, Mrs English and Miss K. O'Brien.

Mrs Andrew Guild, Ohape, Temuka. entertained some of her golfing friends on Saturday afternoon. Some good competitions took place and the prize was won by Mrs Donald Grant.
