CROWN METHODS.

DEFENDED BY JUDGE. (Special to the “ Star.”) YVELLINGTON, May 12. A spirited defence of the Crown’s method, of conducting criminal cases was launched by Mr Justice Chapman, in summing up in a criminal case today, when addressing the jury in regard to imputations made by the prisoner’s counsel. I have never heard a case,” lie said, “ in which such an imputation was made in the face of such obvious fairness. I have listened to the case carefully, and must say the witnesses have acted with scrupulous fairness. The Crown does not desire to convict any particular person, and certainly not an innocent. The whole case has been conducted, as Crown cases all ever New Zealand are conducted, with extreme care, fairness and justice.”
