ST PAUL’S CHURCH.

JUBILEE SOCIAL. The hall was filled lafffi evening for the church social of St Paul’s congregation as a part of the diamond jubilee celebrations’ of the church. The Rev J. Paterson presided. and was supported by other Presbyterian ministers of the city and suburbs. The chairman welcomed those present and expressed pleasure at finding that, so many of the cider members of the congregation were able to attend. He apologised for tho absence o* Hr A. Merringtou, who had had to leave Christchurch earlier than be had expected. He welcomed particularly those who were present who had previously t been connected with, St Paul’* and who were now working in other churches in the city. St Paul’s had many daughter churches. AA'ben thev iooked back over the ten years since the jubilee, they would find that much had been done. He hoped that the church would go forward with the resolve that, through God’s help, the congregation would keep the* church standing for the deep things and tho big things of church life. Ihe Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev AV. Tanner) con gratulatea the congregation on attain ing the diamond jubilee and in tho way .that they had done it. Tt was not sufficient to be reminiscent; they had their work to-day. Those who had gone before had laboured well, and he urged those of the present to carry on the traditions of the church. He congratulated them on their sacrifice in putting out new churches and losing members thereby. He hoped that they would continue in those things and seek to make the church a place of fellowship and go on with the self-sacrifice in the work of God. Ho asked for the blessing of God on tho work of the church in the future The Rev AY. M'Ara said that his acquaintance with St Paul’s dated back to 1878 and he was well acquainted with Dr Elm si ie—-a well-educated and thorough gentleman. Now that he had gone to his reward. his works stood after him. There were many people throughout New Zealand who owed their present standing to the church of St Paul's, Christchurch. The church had a great, responsibility, as the congregation was looked upon as a leading Presbyterian congregation in the city. Their ministers in the past } iaf l been strong men-men such as their* Master. He paid a tribute to the present minister, who, said the speaker. was one'of the quickest in Christchurch in tying a theologicay, philosophical or scientific knot. They had *. man who could hold bis own with any mall in ChrisUt’iurob on scholarship. The ministry of Mr Paterson had done a great deal to raise the morals of the city of Christchurch. The church must not rest with what it had attained, but must go on influencing men for the highest good. A musical programme wa-s given during the evening.
