VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
GREAT SPECTACLE AT HAWAII. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrighf Australian 'and N.Z. Cable Association NEW YORK, May 11. A despatch from Hilo says that the Kilauca crater is angry. A dust cloud from the volcano is rifting to a height, of two miles, and presents an awe-in-spiring spectacle. The Government station reports that it is the strangest sight seen for many years. Rock avalanches continue to thunder withiu the pit, and lava cataracts are falling from the crater, while steam and gas are escaping from the crevasses. The volcanological instruments continue to give evidence that the ancient cauldron lava flow continues, with unknown outlet., which the assistant volcanologist, Mr Finch, indicates is probably into the sea. The sides of the crater are falling, and the lava movement sljows a sinking tendency. Minor earthquakes have been continuous in the neighbourhood—arrording to the seismograph records. Kilaueo. with its vast crater and lake of lava, rises from the eastern slope of Manna Loa, and has an elevation of 4400 feet.
