Nominations for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting; will clos3 at eight o’clock on Friday night. Bon Spec has had a rest for a f?w weeks, and be has now rejoined F. Christmas’s team at Ricacrton. An Auckland owner was after Pilliewinkie last week. It is reported that the price put on the W inkie gelding was 1500 guineas, which should not be cut of the way for a horse of such good class, but no business was done. Attached to the stake for .the Peninsula Cup, the chief event of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting next month, is a handsome gold cup. the gift, of Mr J. F. Buchanan. It is now on view in the window of Messrs Peterson and Co. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will be commenced to morrow. Sunart and Muraahi are two of the popular picks for the Wanganui Cup. The three-year-old tilly Civility looks like starting favourite for the Flying Handicap at Wanganui. She is a brillian beginner, one of the best- in commission at present, and for that reason the track should suit'her. Great interest is being aroused in the meeting between G lent ruin and Gloaming in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday. Judged by their running in the Waterloo Stakes at Trentham last month, when Glentruin was conceding 101 b there may not be much between them, but probably Gloaming will be favourite. Although Surveyor Tan well in the two leading events at the Taranaki meeting last Vveek, he looked N as if lie would be benefited by a spell. Rapine will probablv make bis reappearance in sprint rates at Dannevirke next week. Tt will be interesting to note how h$ performs, as a line to his prospects in events over a journey later in the season. According to a Wellington report. Scion has been sold to a Trentham trainer, who was probably acting for a client.

The Welkin, alter being one of the leading sires in Australia for several years, is gradually dropping down in the winning list. For the first, half of the present season he has the moderate total of £ 40*21.

The pacing mare Cardinal and Blue is in regular work at New Brighton, under the charge of her owner. G. Anderson. The Copa de Ora mare appears to be very quiet and docile in her work. She has plenty of speed, but it remains to be seen if she will race consistently with her training

Gleaming is again in work under the charge of his trainer, W. Warren. It was unfortunate that after remaining sound Gleaming should strike her knee, necessitating another let-up. Naturally. Gleaming is nt present very much on the big side, and it will be some time before he is icady to race, but he appears to be .sound.

Dusky Looanda is training on veil at New Brighton and appears to be on the improve.

Star Queen looks particularly well. So far W. Warren has not had much luck with this unlucky hut mare, hut as she is training on satisfactorily he hopes to be successful in a race before the end of the season.

A promising young pacer by Wildwood Junior is one of the latest additions to W. Warren’s stable at New Brighton.

The pacer Homestead, by Nelson Bingen—Country Belle, is at present hating a spell in the paddock.

Lord Bingen bears a well-trained appearance and is working satisfactorily at New Brighton, under G. F. Robinson’s charge.

A half brother, by Harold Dillon, to Grand Bingen, is one of G. F. Robinson’s team, and the pacer looks furnishing into a useful sort.

"Elite is now on a mark where he will find it very hard to win a race, as at present he does not seem to be on the improve.

Golden Slipper’s sister. Perle d’Or (Multiform —Aura) produced Adour and Molvneaux, by Danube, when owned by Mr G. D. Greenwood. At the latter's sale Perle d’Or became the property of Messrs D. J. Barry and H. White, of Gisborne. She was a shy breeder, but has mated well with Polydamon. Her first foal by that sire. Perle de Lion, ran second o i both days of the Gisborne meeting recently. Two sisters to Perle de,Lion, who runs in his breeder’s colours, ;re running on their owner’s place at Makaraka. Recently P. V. Mason paid a visit to Gisborne and inspected Perle d’Or’s stock, which are under offer to Mr G. D. Greenwood. Unfortunately Mr H. "White has not enjoyed good health recently.

When the Irish horse Cynic, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap. finished racing he went to the stud in the Gisborne district. The first of his stock to race is C-ymbeline (a filly from Multimoie), who contested the Summer Hack Stakes on the opening dav of the Poverty Bay meeting. Cynic was a present from Sir James Carroll to Mr Gaine Carrington, the well-known Gisborne studmaster. Cynic bas done two reasons at- Uakaraka, and looked in viiood fettle when inspected recently. In an adjoining paddock was a well-grown yearling gelding by Cynic from Red Edna by All Red—Edna May 11. He is'a good sort, with a silver mane and tail, and evidently throws back to some chestnut ancestor. This season’s foals sired by Cynic include fillies from Iney. Edna May, Pauleen and her daughters (Gazalia and Heatherspray), and colts from Amusement and Susan Lennox (Kilboy -Edna May).

The heavy impost (lOst 41b) awarded to the English-bred horse Crowdennis in the Newmarket Handicap has furnished a subject for much comment, and it need- hardly be said that considerable curiosity is evinced as to whether his owner, Mr Norman Falkner. will give his horse an opportunity of distinguishing himself in the big sprint handicap set down to be run at Flemngton on March 1. The distinction of carrying the biggest weight in a Newmarket Handicap, jt is interesting to relate, is held by a New Zealand bred horse. In the race of 1900 Machine Gun was awarded list 31b. and he was set to fulfil his engagement. The records show that the son of Hotchkiss came licme in ninth posi-

The Victoria Amateur Turf Club has. without being asked by owners or trainers, dropped into line with oilier Melbourne clubs in respect of payment, of train freight -f horses competing at its meetings. In future the club -will pay freight on all horses from Mordialloc. Mentone and Flemington. All that owners or trainers' have to do will b<* to apply to the Railway Department for a box and put their horses on the train, the club settling the bill.

Soliform is reported from the Wairarapa to have practically recovered from the fall he sustained when racing at. the Auckland Cup meeting. Another of Jamieson’s team. Prince j Martian, will be seen in public again : shortly.

Those who witnessed the strong run put in by Muraahi at the- finish of the Taranaki Cup are expecting him to make a very prominent showing over the longer journey at Wanganui on Thursday. He was lying last for most of the journey, and after being in eighth position at the home turn was only a nose behind Landslide at the post.

At the recent meeting at Canterbury Park. Sydney, both divisions of the two-year-old handicap were won by sons of Magpie, an imported horse who is best known in New Zealand as the sire of the Derby winner. Black Ronald. Both the youngsters raced in the ownership of Mr Robert Miller, but one ot them. Windbag, was knocked down at rh# Sydney yearling sales last Easter to the Waikanae studmaster, Mr J. G. Duncan, for 150 guineas. Windbag’s dam. Charleville. was bred in North Otago, being by Charlemagne 11 from Nothsero, by Stepniak from shepherdess.

Woorak headed the list of winning sires in Australia foi the first half of this season, thirteen of his progeny winning eighteen races, with stakes totalling £14,539. Tressadv was a close second with twenty-four winners of tliirty-nine races, and stakes £14,442. After this pair came Comedy King £12,587. Valais £12,141. October £11.398, St Anton £10,782 and Sea Prince £IO.OOO. Except Woorak, all these sires are English importations, as are most of the. other sires holding piominent positions.

The West Australian owner, Mr P. A Connolly, has* had enough of law. He has paid into court in Perth the £7OO damages awarded T. Darcy in connection with a recent libel case. Another item was th-: latter’s legal expenses? which ran into four figures, and were also borne by the defendant. Although Mr Connolly gave notice of appeal, he is not going on with it. He has evidently had his fill of law, and at present is probably inclined to pass along to someone else his self-imposed task of Turf reformation. In racing it is easy to make aßegations, but when it comes to proving them in a court of law, it is a very different matter. as it has cost Mr Connolly a substantial sub to learn.

Martin Gurry, a once prominent English trainer, died in England in December in his eighty-second year. He prepared a good many horses, the number including Merry Hampton, the 1887 Derbv winner: ‘La Sagesse, the 1895 Oaks winner : and The Bard, winner of the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups.
