Fcr many years a familiar trader between Port Adelaide and Hobart was tho brigantine Rachel Cohen. which wa« Melbourne owned. Several years ago she was sold. and. subsidised by the Federal Government, is now doing service on the northern coast of Australia. The Rachel (ohen is fifty-three years old. and her timbers are reported to be in a good state of preservation still. Her last trip was from Fremantle to Darwin. It was of an adventurous character, and lasted three months. On her way to Broome bad weather was encountered, and good sup pi es ran out. Five of the crew of thirteen went on strike rhere. and were discharged. Unable +0 enrage more hands, the brigantine was compelled to proceed ehorthanded. More bad weather was encountered, and the oil fuel supplies were exhausted in the continuous battle against head winds. Oil supplies were not to be obtained at any of the ports visited, so the sails had to be hoisted. More trouble with the crew was responsible for the loss of a. lifeboat, at Port TTodland. It was >eing towed behind. and the towline parted »ne night. When tl.e Rachel Cohen -eaciied Port Hedland onlv five gallons of fresh water remained. The head viiwle continued throughout the voyage northward ind I at Exmouth Gulf the brigantine was forced to shelter for a week, during which >veral other jruall craft in the vicinity vere I wrecked.
