There were many visitors to the Hakatere Camp during the week-end (writes the Ashburton correspondent of the “Star”). Some indulged in bathing and other pastimes, while anglers plied the rod or line. Mr J. Stewart, ot' Ashburton, who was engaged in fishing for cod. and had a light line, caught a shark instead. The big fish caught on the line at about 11.30 a.m. By skilful playing. Mr Stewart managed to keep the shark’s tail off the line, and kept the head towards the shore. The big fish made many darts to and fro, but committed one indiscretion, after half an hour’s playing, of coming amongst the breakers. The rollers swung him tmvards the shore and after a while he became stranded. At this point the line broke. Ihe line was an exceptionally light one for sen fishing, and but ! for Mr Stewart’s skill in handling both ! line and shark would have been ! lost. The fisherman is surprised that I he managed to land it at all. Help arrived in the persons of Messrs If. Knox and F-. Beeves, ot Ashburton, and little ; by little the monster wa* stunned and ’ then dragged high and dry. Many picnickers crowded round and the aver- 1 age estimate of the captive’s weight j w'ns oowt and the length lift. The fish j was afterwards cut up and taken across j the river for inspection bv the pic- I nickers there. j
